European Architecture – buildings by country
Azores – the westernmost islands of the archipelago (Corvo and Flores) are located on the North American plate. The remaining islands are located within the boundary that divides the Eurasian and African plates.
Greenland – geographically part of North America, politically part of Europe as an autonomous territory in the Kingdom of Denmark.
Russia – parts of Russia west of the Urals are considered to geographically be part of Europe.

European Buildings – Brief Synopsis
The key contemporary European buildings tend to – as is logical – be found in the larger countries of Western Europe, namely Germany, France, UK, Italy and Spain. But over the years certain countries have established – and then lost – great reputations for top quality architecture. In the last three decades this applied to Switzerland and then Spain. Of course they still both produce a good range of top quality architecture, it is just that the fashion focus has moved on, and to a certain extent the actual determinants have been weakened, principally rich clients.
Another country which went through an architectural peak was the UK with the surge of Lottery funded buildings, many of them surplus to specific societal needs. With chnages to Lottery funding this source of major new buildings has dried up.
In the 20th Century European architecture was driven by styles – Art Nouveau, De Stijl, Art Deco, Modernism, Futurism, Brutalism, Postmodernism, Deconstructivism – but this style-driven approach to designing buildings has been fractured by new forces, especially globalism and the internet. New freedoms and ways of our society mean manifestoes and tight stylistic groups are currently ‘out’ but naturally this will change again.

The Chicago Athenaeum and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies announce that two young Norwegian architects, Andreas G. Gjertsen and Yashar Hanstad, principals of the architecture cooperative, TYIN tegnestue Architects in Trondheim, Norway, have been named as this year’s winners of The European Prize for Architecture for their humanitarian work designing and building with community participation in poor and underdeveloped areas in Africa and Asia.
