The Pritzker Architecture Prize presents

On Land: A Model For Community

the 2025 Laureate Lecture and Panel Discussion

The Pritzker Architecture Prize and the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, present On Land: A Model For Community, the 2025 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate Lecture and Panel Discussion, taking place at the Cultural Foundation, Abu Dhabi on Saturday, May 3rd at 5:00pm GST.

Liu Jiakun, 2025 Laureate of the Pritzker Prize will present his most pivotal works through the personal lens of his life’s journey and architectural ethos, revering materials and nature, processes and people. “In my life, architecture is not necessarily a tool for fame or fortune, but is the guidance for me to touch the spiritual height and the depth of my soul,” explains Jiakun. “It resembles my love for literature. They both require lifelong devotion, but the unexpected gains are the motives and inspirations for progress. In parallel universes or cycles of time, wherever I am, I’m myself and resolute. If the stage is not bright enough, I refine myself to shine; if I can’t reach the edge of the sky or sea, I dig deep.”

The 2025 Jury Citation states, in part, “In a global context where architecture is struggling to find adequate responses to fast evolving social and environmental challenges, Liu Jiakun has provided convincing answers that also celebrate the everyday lives of people as well as their communal and spiritual identities…Through transformative projects like the West Village in Chengdu, he reshapes the paradigm of public spaces and of community life. He invents new independent, shared ways of living together in which density does not represent the opposite of an open system.”

Following the lecture, Liu will be joined by recent Laureates, Riken Yamamoto (2024), Sir David Chipperfield (2023) and Francis Kéré (2022) for an intimate discussion on the successes and challenges of their careers, which center around user-centered works that prioritize the justice and integrity of community.

“Liu Jiakun is rooted in one of the most historically significant cities in the world, and at the same time, an architect deeply committed to everyday communities. His architecture integrates local tradition into the world, forging connections and fostering harmony that gives his work a strong presence and pertinence,” shares Yamamoto.

The event is free and open to the public but capacity will be limited and registration is required: bit.ly/2025-laureate-lecture. The program will also be viewable via livestream at: bit.ly/2025-lecture-livestream.

Liu Jiakun is the 54th Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, and resides in Chengdu, People’s Republic of China. The 2025 ceremony video will be released this fall.

Armon Architects presents:

Jewish Architect

Exhibition at Palazzo Bembo in Venice, Italy

at the Time Space Existence 2025 Exhibition during the 19th Venice Architecture Biennale

Riva del Carbon 4793 30124 Venice, Italy

Palazzo Bembo, Venice,

May 8 – November 23, 2025

The synagogue was built thanks to the generous support of the Ruderman Family Foundation.

Architect: Eliezer Armon
Exhibition Producer: Eran B.Y
Exhibition Designers: David Haliva, Mia Kalman
Lighting Designer: Amir Brener
Praying Stand Fabricator: Itzhak Hacoen
Curator: Vladimir Belogolovsky

Eliezer Armon (b. 1955, Tel Aviv) has run Armon Architects in Be’er Sheva, Israel, since 1993. The practice has realized over 100 cultural, civil, religious, and infrastructural projects. Armon is a devoted Kabbalist and a martial artist. “If architecture is a language, then a building is a story,” says the architect whose buildings are rooted firmly in the land and history of Jewish people. Three of Armon’s projects – a synagogue, a cultural center, and a museum – immerse visitors in biblical stories.

“When I wander through the dark nights in the Negev, I connect my buildings as beacons; they are a sort of Hanukkah menorah lights for me,” he explains. A building without a story is meaningless, like a life without a dream. Buildings are like open books.

Officers’ School Synagogue in Bahad 1 evokes a flame that symbolizes the burning bush where Moses was called to lead his people out of slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land.

Abraham’s Well Visitor Center in Be’er Sheva’s Old City houses the archeology museum and ancient Abraham’s well. The center disseminates Abraham’s legacy as the father of all religions by illustrating his life’s journeys. The Shofar Museum in Yavne is designed around a shofar, a ram’s horn trumpet, with a symbolic tunnel structure, a walk-through experience that celebrates achievements of famous Jews worldwide. “Let Us Blow (The Shofar!),” says the Talmud, so the Jewish tradition lives on.

ANTIKYTHERA & MIT ARCHITECTURE present:

THE NEXT EARTH: COMPUTATION, CRISIS, COSMOLOGY

from 9 May 2025

Opening May 9th 2025 at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition
Palazzo Diedo, Venice

Mark Jarzombek, MIT Architecture; Plasticosis Mycosis, Antikythera; Lunar Orbiter Earthrise.

Venice, Italy — The Next Earth stages a dialogue between two pioneering research initiatives: Antikythera’s The Noocene: Computation and Cosmology from Antikythera to AI and MIT Architecture’s Climate Work: Un/Worlding the Planet. Installed on adjacent floors of Palazzo Diedo Berggruen Arts & Culture, this exhibition puts two concepts in dialogue raising urgent questions about our shared past, present and futures and how philosophy and architecture must respond to planetary-scale crises.

Antikythera’s The Noocene: Computation and Cosmology from Antikythera to AI

Antikythera, a global think tank dedicated to reorienting planetary computation as a technological, philosophical, and geopolitical force, takes its name from the first known computer, an ancient device designed to calculate and navigate time and space. The Noocene: Computation and Cosmology from Antikythera to AI explores the evolution of planetary computation as an accidental megastructure through which Earth systems, spanning molecular to atmospheric scales, become comprehensible and composable. The “Noocene” refers to how the evolution of complex intelligence has caused a comprehensive terraforming of Earth, one that it itself is only beginning to comprehend. The Noocene focuses on the role of computation in the transformation of cosmological perspectives, both scientific and existential.

This epoch is defined by a paradox. At the same historical moment that complex intelligence begins to grasp its own evolution, it also begins to recognise that its success may undermine the foundations of its future. What is the role of computation and cosmology in both recognitions? How might this epoch come to better understand itself and thus orient itself?

The exhibition is anchored by an architectural scale video monolith which presents Antikythera’s key concepts as well as select short films on AI, astronomy and artificial life. Selected historical artefacts capture encounters between philosophy and astronomy in the evolution of intelligence. Understanding software as the trajectory of architecture, the installation draws from the contributions of a global network of thinkers across computer science, biology, philosophy, and speculative fiction. The recent work will be presented with select artefacts from the winding history of early modern philosophy, astronomy and cosmology.  As part of the exhibition, Antikythera will publish Accept All Cookies in collaboration with Berggruen Press, a book that codifies many of the core ideas that inform Antikythera’s work in the philosophy of planetary computation.

MIT Architecture’s Climate Work: Un/Worlding the Planet

MIT is the world’s premier research institute in science, engineering and design. A key contributor to this mission is MIT Architecture, whose professional programme in Architecture is the oldest in North America, graduating distinguished alumni such as Gordon Bunshaft, Cass Gilbert, Marion Mahony Griffith, I.M. Pei and Robert R. Taylor. The department is now defined at this intersection of research and practice, driving innovation across the built environment globally.

In the last decade, MIT’s Architecture’s focus has centred on climate and sustainability, mirroring the focus of MIT as a whole. With building construction and operation contributing nearly 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and the built environment on the frontlines of the effects of climate change, we are at a pivotal moment in the history of architecture, and architectural research. From studying historic construction methods, to deploying the latest advances in machine learning for construction, this work is grounded in the department’s history, and MIT’s commitment to the future.

In this context, MIT Architecture’s Climate Work: Un/Worlding the Planet interrogates this impact and the creative and cognitive realignments necessary for a sustainable future. The exhibition features forty works-in-progress by MIT faculty, each presenting a miniature world—reimagining material supply chains, energy expenditure, modes of practice, and deep-time perspectives. These works speculate on how architecture not only relates to the planet but actively reconfigures it, offering new paradigms for shaping, narrating, computing, and rebuilding our world.

Between the cosmic reality of our planet and the ways in which we construct our understanding of it, The Next Earth fosters a dynamic conversation about our current ecological moment and the futures we must begin to imagine. By juxtaposing and synthesising planetary computation and climate-conscious architectural practice, the exhibition challenges us to rethink the scale and span of human action in relation to Earth’s systems.

The Next Earth will be open to the public throughout the Venice Biennale 2025 at Palazzo Diedo.

Architects not Architecture - AnA Event 2025

About the speakers:

Christopher Kelly: he has been an architect for 40 years, returning to Aotearoa‘s best city in 1992 after his apprenticeship abroad, to found Architecture Workshop in Poneke, Wellington.

He is published sporadically in Architecture NZ, the most recent being  #architecturenzohvienna proffering 10 supply and demand led solutions to Aotearoa’s housing inequity. Christopher has served on the NZIA National Executive and the Awards Jury. Architecture Workshop has been recognised by its peers, winning the Prime Ministers Built Environment Award in 2006 for the Oriental Bay Enhancement, the NZIA Gold Medal in 2011 for the Waitomo Caves Visitors Centre and in 2019 the WAF Hotel and Leisure Category for Lindis Lodge in the South Island’s magnificent Ahuriri Valley.

The Otago Peregrine Winery was a co-winner – alongside Tezuka – of the 2004 AR Emerging Architect prize. At the invitation of Architecture Review editor Peter Davey, this entailed a presentation of AW’s work at the 2005 RIBA  Spring Lecture Series in London. Other keynote speaking events include the AIA National Conference, Sydney 2003 and the Stadelschule Alumni Conference Frankfurt 2008. In that same year Christopher was one of the international judges of the inaugural World Festival of Architecture in Barcelona. https://www.architectureworkshop.co.nz

Elisapeta Heta: Principal and Kaihautū Whaihanga – Māori design leader at Jasmax, Elisapeta plays a pivotal role in guiding the practice to become authentically bicultural. As the leader of Waka Māia, established in 2015 to amplify Māori design voices within the firm, Elisapeta has made significant cultural contributions to key projects while advocating for change on international platforms. She offers valuable Māori and Pasifika perspectives, emphasising the importance of place in both design and cultural identity.

Drawing on her lived experience, Elisapeta strives to create pathways for future generations of indigenous designers and inspire young Māori and Pasifika individuals to balance career and community commitments. Her portfolio includes notable projects such as the New Zealand Pavilion at Expo 2020, the redevelopment of Western Springs College Ngā Puna o Waiōrea and the City Rail Link.

Since joining Jasmax in 2015, Elisapeta has become a respected change-maker in the design industry, receiving the prestigious NZIA President’s Award in 2022 for her cultural leadership. She has also contributed to the profession through roles such as co-chair of Architecture+Women (2017-2018) and a director on the NZIA Board, where she helped establish Te Kawenata o Rata, a historic alliance between Ngā Aho and the NZIA. https://jasmax.com

Sally Ogle: is one of the directors of Patchwork Architecture, an award winning Wellington-based studio founded by Sally and Ben Mitchell-Anyon in 2012. The practice was formed following a year spent physically building the Dogbox house in Whanganui – and taking the practical building knowledge back to the drawing board. In the (more than a) decade since then, Patchwork has won a reputation (and a number of awards) for bold and innovative architecture, often crafting modest materials to create surprising spaces.  Patchwork projects can be characterised by a combination of ingenuity and wit, together with the confidence and technical ability necessary to take on the challenges of often difficult sites.  Sally is interested in the betterment of our urban environment, and the role that architects can have in shaping the places we live, from the individual through to the civic scale. https://patchworkarchitecture.co.nz/

MEDS Workshop 2025 Rijeka: The City of Textures

July 30 to August 18 2025

The 14th edition of the MEDS Workshop will take place in Rijeka, Croatia. This year, the theme of the MEDS Workshop invites participants to dive into the stories and experiences of Rijeka, exploring its rich history, culture and dynamic present through its unique textures.

Why Rijeka?

Rijeka, with its rich history and vibrant present, is a city shaped by industrial strength, reflective waters, creativity, and the echoes of human stories. Four central narratives define the city’s collective memory, each contributing to its layered identity. Their interplay, overlap, conflict, fusion, prevalence and vibration create unexpected scenarios. The textures of Rijeka are not merely something that can be seen or touched; they are experienced and felt, making Rijeka a city that leaves a lasting impression. MEDS has the opportunity to become part of these layers, exploring these textures and contributing to Rijeka’s ongoing story.

How to Get Involved?

Designers, architects and artists are encouraged to apply as tutors, proposing and leading project ideas that align with the workshop’s theme. A pair of tutors will work closely with participants, utilizing the provided tools and locations to bring their concepts to life. The annual tutor call is a chance to shape not only projects but also the international dialogue that defines MEDS.

When and Where?

The workshop will take place from July 30 to August 18 2025 in Rijeka, Croatia. Join us in shaping a city that thrives on creativity, connection, and storytelling.

What Is MEDS Workshop?

It is an international workshop for students and young professionals in the fields of design, architecture, urbanism, photography, and other creative disciplines. Each summer, the workshop gathers around 200 participants from across the globe to collaboratively design and build group projects over the course of two weeks. Participants have the opportunity to exchange ideas, broaden their knowledge, and form lasting friendships with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, meanwhile tutors also get to execute their projects. These workshops foster an international environment where educational and cultural themes are seamlessly intertwined.

Since its inception in 2010, the workshop has been hosted in a different location each year. Previous editions have taken place in Ireland, Spain, Greece, Poland, Lebanon, Belgium, Armenia and other countries, showcasing its commitment to diversity and global engagement.

11th edition International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam

NATURE OF HOPE

26 June to 20 October 2024

Under the title Nature of Hope, the 11th edition of the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam examines nature, culture and hope from the perspective of architectural thought and action, as a driving force for social change. What does it take to face uncertainty about the future in a time of profound and multiple transformations – in other words, what are the building blocks we need to remain hopeful?

The IABR 2024 will take place from 26 June to 20 October 2024 and will focus on a combination of hope and nature. This choice stems from the recognition that everything begins with the Earth and that our exploitation – or rather, depletion – of the Earth, each other, and the living world is leading to multiple ecological and social crises. As humans, we can no longer place ourselves above or at a distance from nature and nor do we wish to. How can we put the knowledge and practices of spatial design at the service of the planet and all the creatures that live on it?

Conditions for Hope

In 2024, the IABR will focus on the design of hope – not as a naive position or a binary choice between optimism and pessimism, but as an active practice. After all, change will only land in fertile soil if it comes with the lure and hope of a new dawn. In the face of urgent systemic change, the design disciplines have an opportunity to redefine themselves. How can we consistently engage in a conscious confrontation with the realities of our field of work and our relationships, and find space in them for potential improvement and systemic change?

By focusing on the conditions for hope, the IABR 2024 will contribute to rebuilding social and knowledge infrastructures so that problematic ways of working can be abandoned and alternative ways of working strengthened. Architectural thinking as a flywheel for change!

Beyond the Makeability of the Landscape

The (Western) paradigm of ‘makeability’ – social engineering – and the economization and rationalization of the political and physical landscape in the form of polderen are deeply rooted in Dutch culture and inextricably linked to exploitation, dependency, and inequality. But both our technocratic and our democratic foundations are under pressure. The dominant attitude towards nature and landscape – talking and thinking about and designing in spite of nature – has led to our current situation: overlapping crises of ecology, climate, and social relations.

It is high time for a new (design) attitude: to think and act from nature; to act integrally and collectively; to interweave the multiplicity of (cultural) perspectives, lived experiences, and forms of knowledge – including those of other life forms – and to take the promise of the possible future as a starting point.

Towards a Regenerative and Hopeful Architectural Practice

Spatial designers have a key role to play in imagining and establishing the conditions for urgent change. Many signs of this coming cultural shift are already visible. More and more natural entities, such as rivers, are gaining rights (notably in the Global South). Insurers and financial markets are making their voices heard in the climate crisis debate, taking a stand on the future they want. Architects, urban designers, landscape designers, and spatial policymakers are also increasingly focusing on integrated design solutions: from water and soil the drivers of spatial change, as described in new national policies, to working circularly and carbon positively, (re)using local materials and knowledge building.

In the run-up to the exhibition, the IABR 2024 will support these developments by focusing on exploring and transforming architectural culture and strengthening the conditions for regenerative architectural practices. In this context, the imagination is not a utopian blueprint, but a pragmatic search for what previously seemed impossible.

CURATOR TEAM

The IABR 2024: Nature of Hope Curator Team consists of architect and researcher Janna Bystrykh, architect-researcher and philosopher Catherine Koekoek, researcher and writer Hani Salih, spatial designer and researcher Alina Paias, and designer and writer Noortje Weenink. The curator team, whose members come from different backgrounds but share a common basis in spatial design, manifests the change that is already underway.

LOCATION: NIEUWE INSTITUUT, MUSEUMPARK ROTTERDAM

The main venue of the IABR 2024 will be the Nieuwe Instituut (NI) in Rotterdam, the national museum for architecture, design, and digital culture. The IABR thus returns to the place where it took its first cultural steps 20 years ago. The IABR and the Nieuwe Instituut share a common agenda and both want the design disciplines to play a key role in interpreting and furthering the development of pressing social challenges.

ABOUT THE IABR

As a knowledge and cultural institution, the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) promotes and draws attention to the value of research by design. The disciplines of Architecture, Landscape Design, and Urban Design have an essential, connecting and imaginative part to play in the profound social transformations the world is facing as a result of climate change. The visualization of alternatives is crucial to designing a shared future.

IABR is generously supported by the City of Rotterdam and the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.

Community: The Architect as Catalyst for Change,

the 2024 Laureate Lecture and Panel Discussion

The Pritzker Architecture Prize and Illinois Institute of Technology’s College of Architecture, in partnership with the Chicago Architecture Center, present Community: The Architect as Catalyst for Change, the 2024 Laureate Lecture and Panel Discussion, taking place at the university’s historic S.R. Crown Hall on Thursday, May 16th at 6:00pm CDT.

Riken Yamamoto, 2024 Laureate of the Pritzker Prize, will uncover his personal journey in the discovery of communities throughout the world, inspiring his socially-driven architecture that blurs the boundaries between public and private dimensions. “Every house exists within a town and every family exists within the community of townspeople. The relationship between community and family—the threshold of space between the town and a house—is what allows a community to exist forever,” explains Yamamoto.

“Whether he designs private houses or public infrastructure, schools or fire stations, city halls or museums, the common and convivial dimension is always present,” states the 2024 Jury Citation, in part. “His constant, careful and substantial attention to community has generated public interworking space systems that incentivize people to convene in different ways.”

Following the lecture, Yamamoto will be joined by recent Laureates, Sir David Chipperfield CH (2023), Francis Kéré (2022) and Anne Lacaton (2021), who will engage in a personal conversation about their very different paths of life. Sharing a deep commitment to the value of the social system, they will discuss the responsibility of the architect as a catalyst for change and debate respective challenges of creating and bridging communities as they shape new approaches to the design of the built environment.

“Riken Yamamoto has managed to create a body of work that is consistently ambitious and responsible,” comments Chipperfield. “The buildings manage to be both elegant and meaningful, always looking to have architectural and physical presence while at the same time celebrating ideas of community and social purpose.”

The event is free and open to the public but capacity will be limited and registration is required. The program will also be livestreamed to audiences at Yokohama Graduate School of Architecture, Yokohama National University, Japan, and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and viewable worldwide at bit.ly/laureate-lecture-livestream.

Riken Yamamoto is the 53rd Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, and resides in Yokohama, Japan. The 2024 ceremony video will be released this fall.

The Architecture Drawing Prize Exhibition at Sir John Soane’s Museum

31 January – 3 March 2024

The Architecture Drawing Prize Exhibition opens on 31 January 2024 at Sir John Soane’s Museum in London

Next month sees the opening of The Architecture Drawing Prize exhibition at Sir John Soane’s Museum in London, UK.  It features drawings by the finalists and category winners of the 2023 Architecture Drawing Prize

31 January – 3 March 2024

Sir John Soane’s Museum

13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London, WC2A 3BP, England, UK

Louise Stewart, Director of Sir John Soane’s Museum says:

“Along with producing his own buildings, Sir John Soane sought to inspire young architects to learn from the built world around them, and did so through using drawings in innovative ways. The Architecture Drawing Prize continues this tradition, showcasing new work that celebrates draughtsmanship, skill and innovation.”

This year’s Architecture Drawing Prize exhibition at Sir John Soane’s Museum takes the visionary as its theme. The curators are combining selected drawings from the Prize with examples from Soane’s collection to showcase how drawing is at the very heart of expressing innovation and design intent in architecture.  A reading table dedicated to exceptional drawings through the history of architecture will enable visitors to contextualise the exhibited contemporary drawings from the Prize.

Other highlights of the exhibition are the 2023 Category winners’ works that are notable for their play on the idea of representation and pictorial conventions. The three winning drawings are:

Hand-drawn category: ‘Grundtvig’ by Ben Johnson – United Kingdom

Digital Category: ‘The Archatographic Map of the Incomplete Landscape on Pedra Branca’ by Eugene Tan – Singapore

Hybrid Category: ‘(Re)membering the See Monster’ by Eldry John Infante – Philippines

The Overall Winner of The Architecture Drawing Prize will be announced on 29 January ahead of the exhibition opening.

Ken Shuttleworth, founder of Make Architects who originally set up The Architecture Drawing Prize, comments:

“The annual exhibition at Sir John Soane Museum is what makes this Prize programme so special and we welcome seeing the selected entrants’ work celebrated in London in this way by both our profession and the wider public from around the world.”

The 2023 Prize was judged by:

  • Nikki Bell and Ben Langlands, Artists
