The first stage of the competition, which launched in February 2023, attracted an outstanding global response, garnering 154 team submissions from around the world. The high quality of the submissions led the DMA’s Architect Selection Committee (see Notes below) to increase the number of shortlisted teams from the originally envisaged five to six.

Design: Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates (MVVA)

30 November 2016 – The Texan city of Dallas is set to build a 10,000-acre urban park designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates (MVVA), reports www.globalconstructionreview.com.

The Trinity River Park, which will be 10 times the size of Central Park in New York, will be made up of 7,000 acres of the Great Trinity Forest, 2,000 acres of space between the Trinity River levees and 1,000 acres of already developed space.

MVVA’s design will build on municipal efforts to connect the river with the city. It envisions the space as a “beautiful and naturalistic network of trails, meadows and lakes living in harmony with the river”.

Civic spaces, such as playgrounds, fountains, plazas and lawns, will provide a connection between the city and the floodplain, protect programmatic areas from extreme flooding, and bring a sense of identity to the dry side of the city’s levees.

Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge
When first commissioned by the Dallas City Council in January 2002, to design a “signature bridge,” the celebrated architect derived a plan that will not only create a new icon for the city’s skyline, but will also pump life back into the Trinity River. For Calatrava, the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge is a symbolic gesture; a gateway into the city and the realization of the Trinity River’s enormous capacity to bring a new piece of functional, yet aesthetically stunning development to Dallas.

Wyly Theatre Building Dallas
The Wyly, part of Dallas’s new AT&T Performing Arts Center, features two unique innovations: an auditorium visible from street, enabled by the tall box-like structure of the building, in which supporting services are stacked above and below the auditorium, rather than encircling it as in a standard theatre configuration. Secondly, the auditorium itself is designed for maximum flexibilty: stage, seating, balconies can be quickly reconfigured depending on the needs of the performance on the night.

The building was constructed on a 4.7-acre site at the northwest corner of Woodall Rodgers Freeway and Field Street in Victory Park just north of downtown Dallas. The landscape design, created in conjunction with Dallas-based Talley Associates, serves as an extension of the building design – thoroughly integrated with the programming of space and the overall design character.
