Toronto Architecture – Introduction

Toronto is located in Ontario, in the south of Canada. The city is the largest in Canada. Situated close to the US border the city is set on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario.

Toronto is now the fourth largest city in North America (after Mexico City, New York City and Los Angeles). This Canadian city eclipsed Chicago earlier in 2013. Toronto also has more highrises under construction – something like 170 (at time of writing, Oct 2013) – than any other city in North America.

Major architecture in Toronto includes Royal Ontario Museum building and the L Tower. Key recent buildings are the Ryerson Student Learning Centre and Max Gluskin House. The city feels quite young and there are few historic or early 20th Century classics here. However there is plenty of development ongoing, especially skyscrapers in the CBD. All these buildings are possible to visit on our Toronto Architecture Tours.

Famous architects with buildings in Toronto include Studio Daniel Libeskind, Snøhetta, Diamond Schmitt Architects, Hariri Pontarini Architects and Zeidler Partnership Architects.
