The calls for the 2019 Triennale are now open:

The Poetics of Reason

This title states that, for all its subjective and non-scientific dimension, architecture does rest on reason, and its aim is to shed light onto the specificity of this reason. Indeed, the fact that architecture is grounded into reason and rationality is key to its being understandable, i.e. shareable, by everyone, and not just by architects. Each exhibition will take up one particular aspect or dimension of this theme. Learn more about the 2019 program here. Meanwhile, as customary, calls are now open. Have a look below it might interest you.

Associated Projects

The Lisbon Triennale is looking for national and international independently funded proposals that can be articulated and also complement the central program of its 5th edition. These events can be exhibitions, workshops, talks, and this year also film or music, which deal with crucial problems relating to contemporary architecture and are interested in a lively debate. This call is open till October 31st 2018.

Début Award

This award wants to boost the recognition of recently established studios and is open to architects under 35, or to any studio with an age average that does not exceed 35. During the opening week, whoever wins this prize will also be invited to present their work in a conference. The call for the Début Award will be open till March 26th 2019.

Universities Award

The Lisbon Triennale Millennium bcp Universities Award Competition will entail the participation of architecture schools around the world that will be invited to study a territory. The Triennale at Belgrade’s International Architecture Week

“Lisbon acts”, an exhibition organized by the Triennale opening May 10th 2018 at BINA – Belgrade’s International Architecture Week, joins six architecture studios that have established their companies in Lisbon in the last ten years: Aspa, Barbas Lopes, Can Ran, Miguel Marcelino, PLCO and Site Specific. A significant work belonging to each of these studios was chosen and then opened to the world of fiction, and three other creative minds: writer Patrícia Portela, filmmaker Pedro Cabeleira and photographer Catarina Botelho. We are thinking about how the capital of Portugal has changed in the last ten years and how we have witnessed our ancient city becoming the stage for a process of constant ideological, social, and economic evolution. ARCOLisboa & Triennale in collaboration

The patios at the National Cordoaria, that houses the ARCOLisboa from May 17th to 20th, will have a temporary intervention by Atelier JQTS, winner of a competition promoted by the Triennale and by the well-known contemporary art fair.

Inspired by sculptures by Sol LeWitt and the duo Christo and Jeanne-Claude, the pavilion is formed by a structure that develops in length as well as height, wrapped by a colourful canvas that will welcome the audience – as if it was the sail of a boat, on the riverside. Lisbon Architecture Triennale

Lisbon Architecture Triennale seeks a Chief Curator or Curatorial Team for its fifth international edition to be held in Lisbon (Portugal) from October to December 2019.

The Jury:
The selection committee is composed of the Board of Directors of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale Association and the Chief Curator of the fourth edition:
José Mateus (Chairman); Nuno Sampaio (Vice-Chairman); Dalila Rodrigues; José Manuel dos Santos; Paulo Serôdio Lopes; Pedro Araújo e Sá; Manuel Henriques (Deputy Director) and André Tavares (Chief Curator of The Form of Form).

About the Organization:
The Lisbon Architecture Triennale is a non-profit association whose mission is to examine, foster and promote architectural thinking and practice. It holds a major forum every three years for the debate, discussion and dissemination of architecture across geographic and disciplinary boundaries.

The first Triennale, Urban Voids, took place in 2007 presenting a programme of international exhibitions, competitions and conferences. In 2010 the second edition, Let’s Talk About Houses, consolidated the Triennale’s presence on the circuit of events devoted to architecture. With its third edition, Close, Closer in 2013, the event consolidated its international projection and recognition. The Form of Form, its fourth edition in 2016, has been widely acclaimed as one of the most important architecture events of the year.

In addition to its main event, the Triennale also organizes an architecture conference cycle entitled Critical Distance, which puts practicing architects or architecture-related professionals onstage together with critics, journalists and curators to debate the lecturers’ work in front of a participating audience. Furthermore, it also organizes Open House Lisboa, opening the doors of the city’s most prominent architectural monuments for one weekend per year. From its headquarters in an 18th century Palace, the Lisbon Triennale organizes and hosts a range of other events that constitute the palace’s cultural programming.

Each edition of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale is distinguished with the High Patronage of His Excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic. The Triennale has enjoyed the status of Public Utility since 2013.

The Lisbon Triennale is an open platform for debate, research and promotion of contemporary architecture founded in 2007. Unique in the Iberian Peninsula, it operates in a disciplinary field that benefits of great world recognition due to Portuguese architects who have over the years consolidated their presence outside Portugal, making a mark in the international cultural scene.
