About the Organization:
The Lisbon Architecture Triennale is a non-profit association whose mission is to examine, foster and promote architectural thinking and practice. It holds a major forum every three years for the debate, discussion and dissemination of architecture across geographic and disciplinary boundaries.

The first Triennale, Urban Voids, took place in 2007 presenting a programme of international exhibitions, competitions and conferences. In 2010 the second edition, Let’s Talk About Houses, consolidated the Triennale’s presence on the circuit of events devoted to architecture. With its third edition, Close, Closer in 2013, the event consolidated its international projection and recognition. The Form of Form, its fourth edition in 2016, has been widely acclaimed as one of the most important architecture events of the year.

In addition to its main event, the Triennale also organizes an architecture conference cycle entitled Critical Distance, which puts practicing architects or architecture-related professionals onstage together with critics, journalists and curators to debate the lecturers’ work in front of a participating audience. Furthermore, it also organizes Open House Lisboa, opening the doors of the city’s most prominent architectural monuments for one weekend per year. From its headquarters in an 18th century Palace, the Lisbon Triennale organizes and hosts a range of other events that constitute the palace’s cultural programming.

Each edition of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale is distinguished with the High Patronage of His Excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic. The Triennale has enjoyed the status of Public Utility since 2013.

Lisbon Architecture Triennale 2016

Title: ‘The Form of Form’

Dates: 6 October to 11 December 2016

Curators: André Tavares & Diogo Seixas Lopes

LONDON THE INTERNATIONAL LAUNCH OF THE 4TH EDITION OF LISBON ARCHITECTURE TRIENNALE

How to speak today about the form in architecture?
Where is the architectural form today and what does it mean?

These are the central questions for the kick-off debate on 17 November, 6pm, at RIBA – Royal Institute of British Architects, Lutyens Room. André Tavares, chief curator of the 2016 edition, will debate Communicating Forms with Mark Tuff, awarded English architect of Sergison Bates, and Tim Abrahams, critic and editor of several publications. This debate is a free admission public event.

The last few years, alternative architectural practices conquered terrain on public attention. Institutions and private practices turned their focus to architects as powerful mediators into social processes, shifting the traditional perspective on a profession oriented towards construction. The media contributed to this move, first promoting image-driven production to, just after, celebrating participatory and ephemeral practices. This phenomena generated a positive effect and allowed the enlargement of architecture’s scope. When more and more attention is bestowed to the social engagement of architects, it also seems necessary to look back and resume the discussion on the fundaments of architectural practice.

Triennale’s next edition, The Form of Form, is curated by André Tavares and Diogo Seixas Lopes and will take place from 6 October to 11 December 2016. It aims to stimulate the debate around a large spectre of contemporary positions about the practice of architecture, and to explore the ways in which it transforms the world.

The Lisbon Triennale is an open platform for debate, research and promotion of contemporary architecture founded in 2007. Unique in the Iberian Peninsula, it operates in a disciplinary field that benefits of great world recognition due to Portuguese architects who have over the years consolidated their presence outside Portugal, making a mark in the international cultural scene.

2013 Lisbon Architecture Triennale Lifetime Achievement Award

KENNETH FRAMPTON WINS LISBON TRIENNALE MILLENNIUM
BCP LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD 2013

The Lisbon Architecture Triennale is pleased to announce that architecture critic, historian and professor Kenneth Frampton is the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award. The official announcement took place this Sunday, 15 December, at the Lisbon Triennale’s headquarters, integrated in the closing programme of Close, Closer, its third edition, which ran from 12 September with a dynamic programme of exhibitions, talks, interventions, competitions and associated projects.

Kenneth Frampton

The jury composed by Beatrice Galilee, Gonçalo Byrne, Guilherme Wisnik, Juhani Pallasmaa, Mónica Gili, Taro Igarashi and William Menking chose Kenneth Frampton for his outstanding contribution to architectural theorization and critical reflection, both as as lecturer and author of countless articles, essays and monographs.

In the words of Juhani Pallasmaa “Frampton’s impact in the field of architecture exceeds that of most of the architects who have designed a lot of buildings, but not served as intellectual and ethical guides for several generations of architects and writers.”

William Menking also highlighted the connection between Frampton and the curatorial proposal of Close, Closer “Most international architecture awards only recognize individuals for their built contribution rather than their importance to the culture. Giving Frampton this award makes a statement that architecture culture is not just about buildings but the larger society. (…) I think that this year’s Triennale Close, Closer could only have happened after the sort of critical thinking and architectural activism of someone like Frampton.”

A graduate of the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London, Kenneth Frampton (b. 1930) is currently Ware Professor of Architecture at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, at Columbia University, New York.

Having worked as an architect, architectural historian and critic, he has also taught at a number of leading institutions in the field, including the Royal College of Art in London, the ETH in Zurich, the Berlage Institute in Amsterdam, EPFL in Lausanne and the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio. He is the author of Modern Architecture and the Critical Present (1980), Studies in Tectonic Culture (1995), American Masterworks (1995), Le Corbusier (2001), Labour, Work & Architecture (2005), and an updated fourth edition of Modern Architecture: A Critical History (2007).

Currently in its third edition, the Lisbon Triennale Millennium BCP Lifetime Achievement Award distinguishes a person or practice whose work and ideas have been influential and continue to have a profound effect on architectural thinking and practice today. The prize consists of an original artwork commissioned by the Triennale to a contemporary artist; this year the choice fell upon Portuguese visual artist Fernanda Fragateiro.

The award ceremony will take place at Lisbon’s Centro Cultural de Belém, in early January 2014 and will feature a lecture by the laureate.
Given based on criteria of preeminence in contributions to the field of architecture and spatial practice, and counting Vittorio Gregotti (2007) and Álvaro Siza Vieira (2010) as previous recipients, the Lisbon Triennale Millennium BCP Lifetime Achievement Award is supported by the Millennium BCP Foundation since its creation.

ABOUT CLOSE, CLOSER

The third Lisbon Architecture Triennale Close, Closer opens 12 September – 15 December 2013. Close, Closer will put forward an alternative reading of contemporary spatial practice. For three months, chief curator Beatrice Galilee and curators Liam Young, Mariana Pestana and José Esparza will examine the multiple possibilities of architectural output through critical and experimental exhibitions, events, performances and debates across the city. During the Triennale, architecture will be portrayed as a living, social and artistic force, charting cultural, political, scientific and aesthetic territories. By largely excluding built-form of architectural practice and focusing on alternatives the Triennale is responding to a shifting economic and social climate in which traditional modes of architectural production are changing and where innovation is breeding fast.

2013 Lisbon Architecture Triennale

2013 LISBON ARCHITECTURE TRIENNALE PRESENTS

CLOSE, CLOSER

12 Sep – 15 Dec 2013
Chief Curator: Beatrice Galilee
Curators: José Esparza, Mariana Pestana and Liam Young
Graphic Design: Zak Group

Close, Closer, the third edition of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale examines the political, technological, emotional, institutional, and critical forms of global spatial practice. By questioning the terminology, inspirations, and inventions of other disciplines and their influences in an open forum, we draw the myriad authors of the contemporary city closer to new vital audiences and dialogues.

Led by chief curator Beatrice Galilee and curators José Esparza, Mariana Pestana, and Liam Young, the Triennale will provide a platform for emerging practitioners and protagonists whose work and interests are far from a traditional client-architect model. The exhibitions, conferences, talks, and fringe events organised by the curatorial team should introduce to the public, and a new generation of architects, this expansive and often unchartered field.

Close, Closer will present three exhibitions, one public programme, an e-publishing series, a student prize, and a Début Award for young architects, in addition to an established Lifetime Achievement Award. It will also introduce a number of small Crisis Buster grants that will be used to invest in longterm, civic, and entrepreneurial projects for Lisbon.

Each exhibition, event, or intervention will present a different strand of experimental spatial practice. These range from strategic political or social interventions, cutting edge digital technology to fiction, memory, performance to the role of museums, journals and theorists.

For three months from September 2013, the Lisbon Architecture Triennale will be a critical platform for the plurality of contemporary spatial practice. The events and exhibitions will introduce architecture as a discipline that is not exclusive to professionals or defined only by buildings, but rather as an expanding field with which, amongst others, sociologists, scientists, curators and artists are all dynamically and radically engaging.

Lisbon Architecture Triennale Competition

PUBLIC COMPETITION FOR THE LISBON ARCHITECTURE TRIENNALE EXHIBITION PROJECT IN THE MUSEU DA ELECTRICIDADE

DISCLOSURE OF THE WINNING PROPOSAL

The team led by the Architect Cláudio Vilarinho was the winner of the Public Competition for the creation of the contents for the exhibition of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale to be held in the Museu da Electricidade. The exhibition will take place from the 28 October until the 16 January 2011.

The Jury found this project to be unique in that it accentuates the coherence of the exhibition concept. According to the project brief: “The idea which we are attempting to potentiate and which we are presenting for the Exhibition of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale in the Museu da Electricidade is an idea which is related to the interior (the house) and the exterior (its garden).”

In this way, in the winning project, a scenographic figurative object representing a house creates a sense of transition between the “real exterior” and the “metaphorical exterior”. The house functions simultaneously as a filter between the street and the exhibition space, this being the place where the introduction to the exhibited pieces and the possible audiovisual elements are found in a darker space. It is a direct allusion to the theme of the Triennale – Let’s Talk about Houses – a key component which plays an important and effective role in the assembly of the whole exhibition.

According to the concept proposed, the exhibitions are thus arranged in the area referred to as the “metaphorical exterior” which features plinths designed using, as inspiration, the shape of the petals of the flower of the Royal Poinciana -Delonix Regia – upon which the objects being exhibited are placed.

The expressive or playful intensity which the proposed design could create was also valued, and was deemed to be an important element in the context of an exhibition aimed at a wide audience.
