The 11th International Space Design Award – Idea-Tops, an award which identifies outstanding talents in architecture and interior designs, found its best designs in 18 award categories during the Awarding Ceremony that took place on the 13th of October 2021 in Shenzhen, China, and was hosted by the Idea-Tops Organizing Committee, Council for the Promotion of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Cooperation and Shenzhen Association for Science and Technology.

Eleven overseas designers, along with seven Chinese designers, took home the 18 trophies the best design awards. The 18 awards cover architecture, interior design, lighting design and display art design. Eighty-eight design projects from 21 countries were shortlisted for the global nomination awards.

International Space Design Award Idea-Tops Winners

A total of 7,712 work pieces from 63 countries and regions have joined this year’s competition, according to Idea-Tops Organizing Committee. It is worth noting that a number of world-class architectural firms and design institutes, including Heatherwick Studio, Gensler, Woods Bagot, 10 Design, Benoy, HOK, NBBJ, UNStudio, Perkins&Will, and SAOTA, have submitted their annual representative works to this year’s Idea-Tops too.

The top prizes in villa designs, green architecture and lighting environment categories went to Swiss architect Maria Crivelli, German architect Anna Heringer, and Dutch designer Daan Roosegaarde, respectively.

Other winners are Dominique Perrault Architecture, Baranowitz + Kronenberg, IDIN Architects, Daluz Gonzalez Architekten, Denton Corker Marshall Pty Ltd. etc. All the winners earned lavish praise from the jury for their outstanding projects.

Among all the entries of this year’s Idea-Tops Award, architectural design projects accounted for 14.04 percent, a significant increase from last year. Interior design entries were still the most, among which residential design projects took the lead with 28.29 percent.

In November, 2021, the Organizing Committee of the International Space Design Award Idea-Tops together with the Shenzhen Library opened an exhibition of the winning works of 11th Idea-Tops Award at the Shenzhen Library. The exposition presents the winning projects of this year and previous years and is welcoming visitors from November 1 through November 21. The access is free of charge for everyone, with due regard to health and epidemiologic safety requirements.

After 11 years of development, Idea-Tops has become the most influential and international design Award in China. Its low entry fees are designed to attract both big and small studios, and its judging criteria ensure that winning projects are not only beautiful and innovative, but also benefit users and the environment.

63 countries turn focus to Shenzhen, the design capital of China

11^th International Space Design Award Idea-Tops attracts global attention and are now preparing for the Awarding Ceremony, which will be held on May 27, 2021 at the Window of the World, Shenzhen, China (a large-scale theme park，designed to show the essence of world’s culture).

China’s “design capital”, Shenzhen, has once again attracted global attention. The Organizing Committee of International Space Design Award Idea-Tops recently announced the end of submission period for 11^th Idea-Tops Award. This year Idea-Tops Award received a total of 7712 entries from 63 countries around the world, the number of participating countries and design projects has exceeded the numbers of previous years. Such a raise in numbers demonstrates the great attraction of Chinese market.

The International Space Design Award Idea-Tops is not only the most internationally influential design award in China, but also one of the most popular awards among designers today. Idea-Tops Award was launched in Shenzhen, a city in China, which was recognized by UNESCO as China’s first “design capital” and the most developed city in China’s design industry. In recent years, Shenzhen has held a series of design events with international influence. Great efforts were made to build the competitiveness of the design industry, which resulted in blooming of Shenzhen’s design industry and expanding of its international influence.

The Idea-Tops Award in based in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and is highly respected by the design community for its professionalism, internationality and authority. The annual Idea-Tops Awarding Ceremony attracts the attention of design industry all over the world, and becomes a platform for international architects and designer, where they can learn about Chinese design and make a contribution to the construction of major projects in China. This year, despite the COVID-19 outbreak, the number of entries has increased to 7712 projects, submitted by designers and architects from 63 countries, reflecting the great attraction of China’s construction market and showing the international influence of Idea-Tops Award.

According to the information released by Secretariat of the Organizing Committee of International Space Design Award Idea-Tops, the entries of 11^th Idea-Tops Award include architectural design, interior design, lighting design and display art design (soft decoration design) with 18 design categories in total. Architectural design projects accounted for 14.04% of the total. Among them, residential design projects accounted for 28.29%, dining space design projects accounted for 8.4%, office design projects accounted for 8.58%, commercial space design projects accounted for 10.69%, hotel design projects accounted for 4.35%, exhibition space design projects accounted for 7.31%, and club design projects accounted for 2.18%. From the data analysis perspective, this year’s display art design projects (soft decoration design) accounted for a substantial increase of 5.32%, reflecting to a certain extent that people’s pursuit of a higher quality of life is becoming the main direction of consumption upgrade.

The 11th Idea-Tops Award has become the one with the largest number and the widest range of entries in all previous years. The designers and architects from the developed countries and regions，including the United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, Germany, France, Greece, Switzerland, Portugal, Israel participated this year. New entrants include Cyprus, Bangladesh, Hungary, Kuwait, etc. A large number of top design firms around the world has also submitted projects to Idea-Tops Award, including: Heatherwick Studio, Gensler, Woods Bagot, 10 Design, Benoy, HOK, NBBJ, UNStudio, Perkins&Will, SAOTA, Roth Architecture, MIA Architecture, Gensler, PCA-Stream, noa*, Daan Roosegaarde, Pedro Rica Bayo, Peter Pichler Architecture etc.

Greg Truen, a partner at SAOTA design company in South Africa, told reporters: “We attended and participated in the 9^th Idea-Tops Award in Shenzhen in 2019, and as a company, we met incredible people and gained knowledge and insight on design trends. Being part of the award previously was such a privilege, because it’s the most internationalised and authoritative design award in China, this year we submitted again. We work in 86 countries worldwide, and China is an important market for us. This award is an opportunity for us to share our latest international designs with a global market.”

Filippo Caprioglio, a design director of Caprioglio Architects, a famous Italian design company, said: “Idea-Tops Award, for its prestigious tradition and innovative format is the perfect platform to have the real insight of the path that architecture has taken. It is an honor for our company to participate in the award with such professional jury.”

Professor Wang Tie, President of Architectural Design and Research Institute of Central Academy of Fine Arts and Doctoral Supervisor, said: “In the past 11 years, I have participated in the major events of Idea-Tops Award and personally experienced and witnessed the vigorous development of Idea-Tops Award. All the 7712 entries from 63 countries prove that Idea-Tops Award has become a professional design award, trusted by designers and architects all over the world. Today, when the world has entered a new stage of the development of intelligent cities, relying on China’s huge market, I believe that Idea-Tops Award will become the benchmark of the world’s high-quality design awards, and make a significant contribution to urban construction and urban development!”

2021 is the historical intersection of China’s “two centenaries” and the first year of the “14th five-year plan”. High quality design is the key path that leads to high-quality development. The Idea-Tops Award opened a Pandora’s box of international space design and has already become the engine of industry change.

It is reported that the 11^thIdea-Tops Award has entered a projects review period. The first stage of the judging process has now begun and will continue throughout March. The international jury will review the entries according to the four aspects of innovation, function, artistry and environmental protection, discovering the best designers and design projects around the world. The Awarding Ceremony of 11^thIdea-Tops Award will be held on May 27 at the Window of the World in Shenzhen. It is expected that nearly a thousand outstanding architects, designers and entrepreneurs will attend the event to witness this peak of fame in the global design industry. And the winners of 11^th Idea-Tops Award will become the focus of the global design community.
