Madrona House

Design: CCS ARCHITECTURE. This house was designed as a second home for a Bay Area couple as a summer retreat to spend the warm summer months away from the fog in San Francisco. Built on a steep slope and a narrow lot, this 4000 square foot home is spread over 3 floors, with the master, guest and kids bedroom on the ground floor, and living spaces on the upper floor to take advantage of the views.

The project was designed to serve as an event and exhibition space for the garden festival in Weil am Rhein 1999. The suggested structure does not sit in the landscape as an isolated object, but emerges from the fluid geometry of the surrounding network of paths.

The Wilmotte Foundation’s international PrixW competition is calling for entries from architectural students and recent graduates. For the first time since the Competition began, the prestigious PrixW will focus on a UK site. The competition invites entrants to propose a new cultural and events centre at the Tower of London, London’s most visited tourist attraction. Prix W hopes that a site with such a long and illustrious history will fire the imagination of young architects across the world.

New Town House Building, Kingston University

Architects: Grafton Architects. Images of Grafton Architects’ winning design proposals for the New Town House Building are to go on display from tomorrow at Kingston University’s Penrhyn Road Campus. The practice was selected from a five strong shortlist that also included (in alphabetical order) multi-disciplinary design teams led by: Bennetts Associates; Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios; Haworth Tompkins and O’Donnell & Tuomey.

Located on a bend of the ‘broadwater’ that forms a penicula – which clasps a lake – CRAB created a garden of surprises, yet with a simple basic organization. The scheme is spiritually and physically a collage of events – inspired by the overlaying of creative experiences of every genre and every level of formality. Layering them first, with large forms that are then carved into by the release of caves and ‘scoops’.

Mixed-use leisure building, containing a 1,000 sqm casino, a restaurant, a 100-seat conference room, bowling, bar, brewery, night club, several multimedia rooms, offices and workshops, parking for 250 cars.
Composed of six blocks containing the different entities of the program and arranged mainly on a single level, this new complex offers a clear and simple internal route through the large glass-roofs taken between these six volumes.
