LONDON – ITS CULTURE, ARCHITECTURE, GEOGRAPHY AND FUTURE UNDER DISCUSSION AND UP FOR DEBATE

An after-hours invitation to explore London with leading writers, performers, thinkers, creators, agitators and scribblers.

This autumn, the Museum of London is inviting visitors to discuss all kinds of issues and aspects of London life over a drink with some of the leading thinkers in the city today. The London Salons are informal, relaxed opportunities to sink your teeth into subjects of concern and relevance to Londoners today.

The museum’s London Salons take their inspiration from the conversational gatherings which began in 16th century Italy and were pursued with enthusiasm in 17th and 18th century France. These settings for the exchange of ideas were the forerunners of the English coffeehouses which were used for discussion of politics, current affairs (and often tittle tattle) during the 17th and 18th century.

Each event will look at a particular part of London life, with the guidance of a relevant expert host. Forthcoming subjects include life at the edges of London, the role of culture in the city and possible scenarios of London life in 2078.

The London Salons are part of City Now City Future, a year-long season of events at the Museum of London, which explores some of the challenges of urban life and the future of global cities.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

THE LONDON SALON: CULTURAL INFRASTRUCTURE
Tuesday 14 November, 7-10pm

Can culture be designed into the city? Galleries, theatres and concert halls all bring art to audiences but are they necessarily places where culture is reinvented? It can be argued that culture is developed in smaller hubs such as artists’ studios, rehearsal rooms and co-working spaces, but even these spaces aren’t enough to protect urban culture. As a result the Mayor of London is currently developing what is claimed to be the world’s first cultural infrastructure plan, providing a strategy for urban development to support culture.

In an evening of talks and performances, in collaboration with artists network T h e a t r u m M u n d i , we will debate whether culture can be considered as an infrastructure for a city, no less essential than water and sewer pipes, roads, underground or electric wiring. Four architectural practices will share their ideas and Theatrum Mundi will present the results of year-long research project involving artists, planners and academics. Guests include John Bingham-Hall and Adam Kaasa (Theatrum Mundi), Deborah Saunt (DSDHA), Amica Dall (Assemble), Steve Tompkins (Haworth Tompkins) and Oliver Goodhall (We Made That).

THE LONDON SALON: AFTERSHOCKS

Tuesday 12 December, 7-10pm

“It’s 2078. Speed has become a given in the city’s drive through modernity. Retro- planners argue over the direction London might have taken, while post-archaeologists of the once-global city examine shards and treasures of future London pasts.” The network of researchers and community activists, Li vingmaps, will use a mix of live performance, multimedia and audience interaction to map different futures for London. The audience is invited to bring images of things to preserve, create or demolish and contribute to a pop-up museum on the night, showing future generations of Londoners how we went from now to then.
