Instil a Love of Learning in Children: A 7-Step Process
19 May 2021
A child’s brain is like a sponge and will absorb anything that it comes across. Instilling a love of learning in your children will help to improve their chances of being successful later in life. Stimulating your child’s mind and developing their skills from an early age will not only improve their chances of getting into a good school and being a success, but it will also build their confidence. This article will tell you how you can instil a love of learning in your children in seven easy steps.
Playgrounds
Children love to play with one another, and by playing with one another, they become more confident and learn to communicate. Communication is one of the most important parts of the learning process. If your child cannot communicate properly, then they may struggle to learn in a classroom. Taking your child to playgrounds from a young age will help them to meet other children and develop a more inquisitive eye. Because of lockdown restrictions, you may not be able to take them at the moment, but as soon as they lift, get them out there to meet other children.
Hobbies
Encouraging hobbies and passions in your children can help to instil a love of learning in them. When they begin to associate learning with fun, then they will seek education out for the rest of their life. Hobbies and passions must always be safe and age-appropriate. Some of the most popular hobbies for young children are martial arts, reading groups, puzzle clubs, and playgroups. Never force a hobby upon your child, however. This can have the opposite effect and can make them associate learning with misery.
Get Hands-On
Learning, in theory, is good and well, but sometimes your child needs practical experience. If your child is learning about safari parks and zoo animals in school, then you should take them out on a day trip to the zoo or to the safari park. This will help them, again, to associate learning with fun. Sitting in front of a textbook reading about a lion cannot compare to standing in front of one at a zoo.
Fun Learning
Making learning fun is a very important part of instilling a love for learning in your children. If they always associate learning with boredom and misery, then they are more likely to act out in class and less likely to knuckle down and concentrate on their schoolwork. Learning can be fun, it just requires commitment from you. In school, teachers have time limitations and other children to worry about, so it is your responsibility to teach your child outside of school and to make it enjoyable. Alternatively, you can take them to an after-school tutor who shares the opinion that learning can be fun. Hands-on activities like we just mentioned are another way to make learning fun.
Style of Learning
Everybody learns differently. This is a problem that many teachers have. They apply a single style of teaching to their classrooms and are surprised when children act out or refuse to learn. Some are not book readers, and some are not practical learners. It is your responsibility to learn your child’s style of learning, and then figure out how to apply that to them to encourage them to learn more. Some styles of learning are incompatible with classrooms, so if your child falls into one of these categories, you will need to do your best to teach them outside of school and on the weekends.
Your Own Passions
If your child sees that you have your own passions that you love, then they are more likely to find their own or to share yours. Creating a culture of learning, passion, and sharing in your household can help to instill a love of learning in your child. With that said, you must not force your passions on your child, as this can have much the same effect as forcing them to have their own passions.
Supportive and Encouraging
The most important part of instilling a love for learning in your children is a supportive and encouraging attitude. Your child mustn’t ever feel that they are going to be punished for not wanting to learn. They should be able to come to you and receive encouragement and support about whatever it is that they want to learn, provided that it is appropriate. Always support and encourage your child.
Teaching your child to love learning is not easy, but the benefits it can have for them are huge. The suggestions made here, when applied to your own life, should be very effective in helping your child to love education.
