Options and Requirements

Once you’ve completed your 5-year bachelor’s degree in architecture, you are free to decide how far you want to go with your education. If you’ve already graduated from a different field of study but would like to become an architect, you may benefit from a master’s in architecture. Doctorate programs are also viable for anyone who wants to resume their education in the field. Regardless of whether you have a bachelor’s or a graduate degree, you must be licensed to practice as an architect. Most states will require you to join a training program that’s approved by the National Architectural Accrediting Board, which are all typically designed to offer a Bachelor, Master, Ph.D., or Doctor of Architecture.

Bachelor of Architecture

Bachelor of Architecture programs are typically 5 years long and include theoretical, design, and construction methodology courses. Most of the common topics include disabled-friendly designs, environmental design, and architectural documentation. You learn to use tools that will help you embark on your career as an architect. If you don’t have a bachelor’s in architecture, you may benefit from going back to college through either enrolling in an undergraduate or a graduate (Master’s) architectural program. If you do, then the following are a few options you may want to consider.

Master of Architecture

Some Master of Architecture programs may accept students who have graduated and are in possession of a bachelor’s degree in any field. However, others may require you to complete a bachelor’s degree in the same field or any related field. This program can take 1 to 5 years to complete, depending on your previous knowledge in architecture.

Ph.D. and Doctorate of Architecture

The only accredited Doctor of Architecture Degree in the U.S is available at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, according to the National Architectural Accrediting Board. This program is 7 years long and accepts students with either a bachelor’s or a master’s degree in architecture. Since it also offers a blend of undergraduate and graduate studies, it enables students who had just graduated high school to enroll.

Internship

After you’ve graduated from a program that’s approved by the National Architectural Accrediting Board, you may need to complete an internship that’s approved by the Intern Development Program. This is the only way you can meet the requirements of state licensure, which is necessary if you want to practice professionally.
