Centerbrook was commissioned by private collectors to transform a former rehabilitation facility on Rhode Island’s Pawcatuck River into a public museum for their cherished American Impressionist art collection.
The Westerly Museum of American Impressionism, project reimagines both the building and its site to create a cultural destination that reconnects with its riverfront setting.
Where asphalt parking once dominated, native meadow grasses now evoke the landscapes rendered by Impressionist painters. The redesigned exterior—featuring rhythmic vertical battens, nautical blue siding, and soft gray metal roofs—moves from an institutional feel toward a simpler shape that reflects the dynamic art collection and blends with the surrounding landscape.
Inside, its 20,000-square-feet were reconfigured into thirteen galleries for permanent and temporary exhibitions, housing the largest known collection of American Impressionist works. Three wings extend from a central lobby, with galleries, offices, and event spaces overlooking the river.
Skylights carved into former flat ceilings softly filter natural light, while framed views of the river and landscape offer a living complement to the natural scenes painted by both renowned and unsung New England artists.
