Westmead Millennium Institute Building in Sydney
The longest running architecture award in Australia, the prestigious Sulman medal was given to BVN for the
Westmead Millennium Institute (WMI) in the middle of Sydney’s western suburbs.
This award shows how successful the WMI leadership has been in realising their aim to produce an iconic building to physically express the excellence of thinking that is taking place within and to give the people of western Sydney a building they can be proud of.
According to the jury, “It strikes an impressive presence along Hawkesbury Road, almost formidable at the suburban edge of the campus.”
The jury also found that there was a strong sense of logic throughout the design and that “this logic brings clarity to a complex, multi-functional brief.” They noted how transparent the building is and how “access to light and views to the outside are provided equally from within and through laboratories, offices and communal spaces.”
“This is a project where every aspect has been considered. The sensitivity and deftness of this consideration has transformed the building’s logic into an uplifting and inspiring environment for collaboration and research,” said the jury, on 3rd July 2015.
According to Mr Julian Ashton, Principal, BVN “The Westmead Millennium Institute takes laboratory design away from dark internally focussed spaces into light filled areas with significant exterior glazing allowing views outside and a great deal more daylight in the laboratory than in traditional laboratory design.”
“A central stair connects the laboratories which together with shared write up and common spaces enables researchers to meet and collaborate far more freely than previously,” he said.
Also notable is the fact that last night BVN became the first architecture practice to win eight Sulman awards since the award was first given 83 years ago in 1932.

WESTMEAD MILLENNIUM INSTITUTE OPENED BY PRIME MINISTER
The Westmead Millennium Institute (WMI) in Sydney that is headquarters for one of the largest medical research institutes in Australia was officially opened by the Prime Minister, Tony Abbott today.
“The building is designed to provide a flexible space that facilitates connectivity and collaboration amongst the research community, in line with WMI’s “bench to bedside” approach,” said Mr Julian Ashton, Principal of BVN who led the design team.
He noted that the design reflects the idea of “seeing the science”, whereby the form of the building reflects the inner workings and functions.
An atrium fills the circulation spaces with daylight and provides opportunities for more physical interaction between the scientists as well as views across the floors.
The laboratories are stacked atop each other and planned in a linear arrangement to provide efficient services and improved circulation and flexibility in the use of the laboratory areas. This design will also accommodate future expansion of the laboratory areas.
Mr Ashton pointed out that the heart of the facility and the social spaces take up the lower levels with a two storey café space opening to a large external garden and recreational area.
