‘And Action!’ for the House for Film and Media, Stuttgart, Germany
The state capital Stuttgart has approved the final designs for the Haus für Film und Medien project. The demolition of the Breuninger car park will now begin so that the lively, urban meeting place in the centre of Stuttgart can open in 2029.
In addition to cinemas with a curated programme, all moving image formats from animation, games and software to virtual reality, augmented reality and artificial intelligence will be further developed in labs and studios for active media work on around 4,500 square metres. With its open workshop rooms and event areas, the centre is aimed at all citizens, but also at the international and intercultural film and media industry.
The spatial structure that connects all levels is created by the arrangement of air spaces and generous staircases as well as transparency and visual references. Flowing transitions are created from Leonhardsplatz to the wide-open staircase in the entrance area, the foyer, the exhibition areas and the open patio on the top floor. The planning takes into account aspects of accessibility, including visual and hearing impairments. The House of Film and Media is designed as a modern and sustainable building that, for example, generates its own energy for the characteristic LED lighting on the façade
