Stuttgart Airport Stuttgart Airport Undergoes Modernization gmp Awarded Contract for Sustainable Renovation

An exciting new challenge for gmp at Stuttgart Airport! After successfully participating in the public procurement procedure entitled “STRzero Terminal: Terminal 4,” the firm has been awarded the contract for the project. It includes two components: the renovation and modernization of the existing Terminal 4, as well as a master plan for the comprehensive energy-efficient refurbishment of the existing buildings.

These measures are a significant part of the airport’s climate strategy, which aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040. As the architectural firm that designed and planned Terminals 1, 2, and 3 of the airport between 1980 and 2004, this project offers us a unique opportunity to continue our own work after nearly two decades and transition it into a sustainable future. The focus of the renovation is on significantly improving the energy efficiency of the entire airport.

The plan includes the use of large-scale photovoltaic systems to generate electricity from renewable energy. Other proposed measures, which will be examined in detail as part of the energy concept, include the use of rainwater, wastewater heat exchangers, ice storage, and geothermal energy to make the energy supply more sustainable. The facades will also be improved by using energy-efficient, coated double or triple glazing. The facade structure will be preserved – by renovating existing building parts, the embodied energy within them can be retained.

For the project, gmp is employing state-of-the-art design methods such as Building Information Modeling (BIM). BIM allows the simulation of the entire lifecycle of the building to ensure the most resource-efficient and sustainable construction possible. This is complemented by the application of Lean Management methods, which ensure agile and efficient planning, design, and construction processes. Additionally, gmp’s own Green Dialogue system is being used. This guarantees that all measures meet the highest sustainability standards. From material selection to energy supply, a holistic, environmentally friendly implementation is ensured, which is a pioneering approach for an excellent ecological and economical outcome.

gmp executive partner Nikolaus Goetze is particularly proud of the commission: “This project not only allows us to further develop our own design but also gives us the opportunity to actively shape the sustainable future of Stuttgart Airport.”
