DuPont Corian presents an evening with Alison Brooks of Alison Brooks Architects at RIBA London, on November 11th 2015
DuPont Corian Evening with Alison Brooks
DuPont Corian is delighted to announce a special event focussing on the future of façades, with the participation of Stirling Prize winner Alison Brooks of Alison Brooks Architects. Taking place in the Jarvis Suite at RIBA HQ on Portland Place, London W1B 1AD, on November 11th, the evening offers a programme of presentations, discussions and refreshments. Participation is free but attendance is by registration at: www.future-of-facades.corian.com
DuPont Corian is increasingly valued as a versatile, high-performance solution for façade systems and has been applied in imaginative ways to a wide variety of construction projects internationally, from private villas to hotels and public buildings.
Alison Brooks Architects has first-hand experience of the considerable benefits that DuPont™ Corian® can bring to a project, as the multiple award-winning Lens House by the practice features the material to its angular ventilated façade. This was the first significant cladding project with DuPont™ Corian® in the UK and the design has since been recognised not only with RIBA National and London awards, but also a shortlisting for the Manser Medal and trophies from the Architzer and Grand Designs awards.
The format of the evening, running from 6pm to approximately 8:30pm, will include welcome drinks and introductions, presentations by Alison Brooks and by façade installation specialists Urbana, plus experts from DuPont™ Corian®, followed by a Q&A session and further refreshments, with an opportunity for informal networking. The event is kindly supported by CD (UK) Ltd, the exclusive distributors for DuPont™ Corian® in the UK.
Architects wishing to attend the event should register at: www.future-of-facades.corian.com
or alternatvely call 0800 962 116 or email [email protected].
Alison Brooks comments on the choice of DuPont Corian for The Lens House:
The Lens House project was conceived as a pair of crystalline forms that envelop a 19th century building. The new volumes, one a workspace and the other extending the living space, were intended to hover above the landscape while inside, large apertures frame concise views of the garden or funnel light from above.
There is a direct correlation between external form and interior space that I would describe as plasticity. This approach required a cladding material that could express both consistency of surface and geometric precision in order to express the new volumes as pure, sculptural objects. We were aiming for an architecture where wall and roof are indistinguishable, without flashings, copings or other layers of conventional architectural cladding.
DuPont™ Corian® proved to be the perfect material to achieve the precision and seamlessness that the concept required. The large format sheets meant that joints could be minimised, emphasising large planar surfaces. Corian® is used equally for window surrounds, sills and reveals, door cladding, soffits and roofing. A ‘through’ material, the sheet could be precisely cut to achieve multi-plane junctions and clean chamfered corners. After five years the Corian® cladding at Lens House has retained its charcoal pigmentation and soft reflectivity. It appears ageless and weightless, helping us make light tangible as form.
