New United Nations Tower Building

U.N. Tower Building in New York City

Design: FXFOWLE Architects

FXFowle Principal Dan Kaplan explained that much of the design work had been completed for a 35-story tower on the site, and while it will not change significantly, it does require some updating, reports the New York Observer.

Following a land deal with New York City, the U.N. is back to work on building a new tower to house its operations across the street from the under-renovation U.N. Secretariat. Celebrated Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki, is back to work on the project, along with local partner FXFowle.

The most notable project by Fumihiko Maki in Manhattan, if not the world, is Tower 4 at the World Trade Center (WTC), currently rising downtown. Among FXFowle’s many New York projects are The New York Times Building, where the firm partnered with Italy’s Renzo Piano Building Workshop.

The UN Tower architecture competition in 2004 was only open to Pritzker Prize-winning architects.

United Nations Headquarters

UNO Buildings
Location: 1st Avenue, Turtle Bay, New York City, USA
Date built: 1947-53
Design: Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer, Sir Howard Robertson

This is the only Le Corbusier building in New York; it starred in the Fountainhead film.

This HQ complex in New York City served as the official headquarters of the United Nations since its completion in 1952.

United Nations Headquarters New York City

The main building is a massive slab block – Secretariat, 39-floor office tower – that rises up by the East River, located near the UN Plaza.

The UN Building New York is located in the Turtle Bay neighborhood, between First Avenue and the East River, and between East 42nd Street to the south and East 48th Street on the north.

The United Nations has three additional, subsidiary, regional headquarters or headquarter districts, in Geneva, Vienna and Nairobi. The 17 acres (69,000 sqm) site occupied by the United Nations Headquarters is under the sole administration of the United Nations, ie it is not part of the USA.

The land was purchased from New York real estate developer William Zeckendorf. Sr. Nelson Rockefeller arranged this purchase. The $8.5 m purchase was then funded by his father, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., who donated it to the city. Architect Wallace Harrison – personal architectural adviser for the Rockefeller family – acted as Director of Planning for the United Nations Headquarters Building. His architecture practice, Harrison and Abramovitz, oversaw the execution of the UN HQ Complex design.

Another key Le Corbusier Building in the USA is the Carpenter Center, Cambridge, Massachusetts, dating from 1963.

Le Corbusier in America

The Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University is the only significant building by Le Corbusier in the USA other than the United Nations Building in New York. Built in 1961-63(64) it is a simple medium-rise building dominated by a cranked ramp. It appears in many architecture textbooks and courses.
