Rem Koolhaas Plans an Exhibition at the Guggenheim New York Museum

Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, of architecture studio OMA, has shifted his focus to the countryside, reports the New York Times.

His recent research obsession will be the subject of “Countryside: Future of the World,” an exhibition planned for the Guggenheim Museum’s spiral rotunda in fall 2019, the museum announced on Wednesday.

The exhibition — organized by Troy Conrad Therrien in his most ambitious project since he was hired as the Guggenheim’s first curator for architecture and digital initiatives three years ago — will explore how the world’s rural landscapes have been altered by technology, migration and climate change.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is a stunning, iconic building. Whether viewed from outside or within it is visually memorable and it exerts itself on those entering, for exampe via the spiral ramp. However some of the internal planning seems clumsy, especially the junction of the iconic ramps to the rectilinear northern part of the building: some gaps are just too tight and there are fairly meaningless spaces leftover. Permanent collection of 19th-20th century art.

Founded in 1937, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation is dedicated to promoting the understanding and appreciation of art, architecture, and other manifestations of visual culture of the modern and contemporary periods, and to collect, conserve, and study the art of our time. The foundation realizes this mission through exceptional exhibitions, education programs, research initiatives, and publications, and strives to engage and educate an increasingly diverse international audience through its unique network of museums and cultural partnerships.

Currently, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation owns and operates the Guggenheim Museum on Fifth Avenue in New York and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection on the Grand Canal in Venice, and also provides programming and management for two other museums in Europe that bear its name: the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin. The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Museum, a museum of modern and contemporary art designed by architect Frank Gehry, is scheduled to open in 2013. With nearly three million annual visitors worldwide, the Guggenheim and its network of museums is one of the most visited cultural institutions in the world.

Frank Lloyd Wright, America’s preeminent architect, designed the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum-his only major commission in New York-from 1943 through 1956. Completed in 1959, the Guggenheim was, when it opened, as much a marvel of construction as it was of design and is among the 20th century’s most important architectural landmarks. In 2008, the Guggenheim completed a four-year restoration of its facade, and in 2009/2010, the Guggenheim celebrates its fiftieth anniversary year.

Guggenheim Museum Architecture Films

Metropolis, 1927
Directed by Fritz Lang
Dec 3 + 10, 2010
Perhaps one of the most famous and influential of all silent films, Metropolis takes place in 2026, when the populace is divided between workers who must live in the dark underground and the rich who enjoy a futuristic city of splendor. In this new digital restoration, the tense balance between these two societies is realized through elaborate sets and modern science fiction.

The Architecture of Doom, 1991
Directed by Peter Cohen
17 + 24 Dec 2010
Featuring newly researched footage of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime, The Architecture of Doom captures the inner workings of the Third Reich and illuminates the Nazi aesthetic in art, architecture, and popular culture. Hitler worshipped ancient Rome and Greece and dreamed of a new golden age of classical art and monumental architecture populated by beautiful, patriotic Aryans. There was no place for so-called degenerate artists like Pablo Picasso and other modernists or for “inferior” races like Jews in his lurid fantasy. This riveting documentary shows how Hitler rose from failed artist to creator of a world of ponderous kitsch and horrifying terror.
