The Aerolineas Argentinas Hangar 5 project, which took more than three years to develop and involved more than forty professionals, is authored by ASZ (Antonini Schon Zenborain arquitectos) and MZM (Maletti Zanel Maletti arquitectos).

Although both studios have been working together for years on various projects, they knew that developing this megastructure would be the biggest challenge they would face together. The project was directed by architects Guillermo Schon and Alberto J. Maletti and coordinated by architects Fernando Zanel and Leonardo Sarsale.

It is worth considering that the height restrictions of the building, established by aviation authorities, and the height requirements for lifting aircraft were major constraints on the structure’s design.

It has an access gate system that must guarantee 84 m in length by 25 m in height. It is composed of 8 automated doors, each 10.5 m wide by 25 m high. A Gantry Crane will sweep the central area of the hangar covering the fuselage of the aircraft, and two lateral Gantry Cranes will cover the wings.

In addition, it will have its corresponding service, maintenance, storage, office, and personnel service areas. Two other buildings complete the complex. One will be an 8000 m² aeronautical material warehouse, and the other is a 2000 m² service building that contains machine rooms and water reserves. Outdoor areas such as approach platforms, streets, and sidewalks are also included.

Parallel to the west facade of the Hangar, a linear building will be developed that will house the service premises and machine rooms that will supply the Hangar and Warehouse. It will house 4.5 million liters of water and fire reserves, an air compressor machine room, a transformer station, generator sets, and other support areas.

The warehouse has a main space that is 121 meters long and 50 meters wide and will allow for the storage of aeronautical material through automated systems. Due to the fact that it cannot have structural elements that interfere with the free floor plan, it is structurally resolved with a system of transverse reticulated metal portals.

Both the Hangar and the Warehouse complete their programs with a two levels annex building that concentrates access for personnel and the public, services, changing rooms, offices, and archives. The buildings integrate with a system of sidewalks and service streets that guarantee access, connection, and perimeter circulation of the same. In addition, a concrete platform links the hangar with the Joulliet runway across its entire width. The rest of the unoccupied surfaces will be preserved as landscaped green areas.

For the calculation of its metal structure, the preponderant action is undoubtedly the wind. This project dates back to 2011 and the application regulation for the determination of wind actions was CIRSOC-102 of 1984. According to this regulation and also by ORSNA’s (National Airport System Regulator) requirement, this construction must be considered within Group 1, corresponding to a probable speed coefficient of 2.13. In addition, due to its location, it corresponds to assign it Roughness I.

The metal structure of the Almacén was calculated considering the preponderant action of the wind. According to the CIRSOC-102 regulation of 1984, which was the application regulation for the determination of wind actions at the time of construction, this construction must be considered within Group 1, corresponding to a probable speed coefficient of 2.13. In addition, due to its location, it corresponds to assign it Roughness I.

The Hangar has three overhead cranes inside, each with a lifting capacity of 50 kN, which together cover practically the entire interior surface of the Hangar. These cranes run perpendicular to the access gate, one central and two lateral. The central one covers a span of 40 meters with a free height of 22 meters under the hook, and the lateral ones cover 25 meters each with a free height of 20 meters.
