KS has, together with the client Genova Property Group, won a land allocation competition for a new city block in Sala Backe, Uppsala – right next to Brantingsskolan

Brantingsskolan is a municipal school currently undergoing extensive refurbishment. The land allocation competition consisted of a uniquely close process with a continuous dialogue between city, architect and client – a part of Uppsala’s focus on sustainable urban development. The block consists of three independent buildings designed by Kjellander Sjöberg in cross-laminated timber that link, enrich and help define the cityscape. Sala Backe today combines a green network of parks, tree-lined streets and green courtyards. The new buildings become a part of this, creating a series of vibrant urban spaces in a green and varied environment.

Flexibility was crucial in shaping the architecture. The houses have rational plans, with a functional core and outer apartment and balcony zones that can easily be rearranged to suit future needs. The ground floor is provided with generous commercial spaces, which – like the apartments – all face at least two cardinal directions. The buildings are without backs and are closely integrated with streets, yards and the park path – a design that creates a lively cityscape.

“Sala Backe is a very interesting project, in which both city and developer have high ambitions in terms of urban and architectural quality. After an intense dialogue process, we feel we really have a project that fits next to Brantingsskolan.” – Ola Kjellander, founding partner of Kjellander Sjöberg
