The Phillip and Patricia Frost Institute for Chemistry and Molecular Science introduces new opportunities for advanced research and discovery on the University of Miami’s campus in Miami, Florida. The six-story research laboratory facility was strategically designed to fit between two important green spaces on campus. Using recent developments in cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and near-atomic solutions, the Frost Institute provides 94,000 square feet where biological, material, and chemical sciences can intersect.

The Frost Institute of Chemistry and Molecular Science features:

  • An Innovative modular laboratory bench system good for swift modification and adaptation for an ever-evolving scientific research program
  • Natural glare-free light and views in all spaces except for those requiring darkness, with large glare-free windows oriented to the park views outside
  • Clear wayfinding to facilitate informal meetings and chance encounters between leaders, researchers, visitors, and graduate assistants. This is accomplished by windowed openings at the end of each corridor where they cross the elevator lobby
  • A mechanical system is designed to minimize AC/fume hood ducting, gas & fluid piping distances to the mechanical floor and roof
  • An “L” shape design with two wings joined at the SE corner by the elevator lobby and restrooms to permit offices to receive visitors, faculty and students while access to research facilities will require security permission

Miami Beach Bandshell Tribute to Norman M. Giller, FAIA, Features Free Concert

Miami Beach Bandshell Florida
photo : Robin Hill

Miami Beach, FL, USA –The Miami community is invited to the Miami Beach Bandshell (73rd & Collins Avenue) on Thursday, October 20, 2022 at 7:30 PM. The event honors bandshell Architect Norman M. Giller, FAIA & the bandshell’s recent designation on The National Register of Historic Places.

The evening’s festivities begin with a tribute to Norman M. Giller, FAIA, the original architect of the bandshell in 1961. Giller was one of the founders of Miami Modern — or MiMo, a regional style of architecture that developed in South Florida during the post-war period. “The Miami Beach Bandshell is an iconic representation of MiMo architecture and is as fresh today as when it was designed over 60 years ago. The canopy addition fits as though it was part of the original design. It surely has stood the test of time” said Ira D. Giller, A.I.A, Norman Giller’s son.

The Psychic Mirrors take the stage following the Giller tribute and proclamation presentation from the Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber. Psychic Mirrors is a six-piece band from Miami that plays a combination of yacht rock, boogie-funk and wavy synth jazz.

The free concert is part of North Beach Social, 3rd Thursdays at the Bandshell and is co-sponsored by the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU, whose current exhibition Giller & Giller: An Adventure in Architecture is on view through October 30,2022. The museum is located at 301 Washington Avenue on Miami Beach.

Miami Beach Convention Center Park

The existing parking lot will be transformed into a new world-class public park complete with geometric paths for pedestrians and cyclists alike, five hundred trees, a flexible lawn area, custom concrete benches, and modern art installations. This Miami landscape design is by West 8, The Netherlands. A vibrant plant palette, from slender Montgomery Palms to bright Flame Trees, showcases the unique flora and botany of Miami Beach. The visually intriguing lawn will be framed by dense shade gardens; creating a captivating backdrop for outdoor events.

An impressive collection of modern art pieces will adorn the completed Convention Center grounds. As the centerpiece of the new park, Bent Pool, a striking public art installation by international artists Elmgreen & Dragset, confronts conventional sculptural traditions by turning a swimming pool into a monumental arch. A Veteran’s Memorial is seamlessly woven into the park experience telling the unique story of Miami Beach’s Veterans.

The park is part of West 8’s vision for a renewed 40-acre Convention Center District, which dramatically transforms the day-to-day experience for residents and convention attendees and contributes to Miami’s expanding art and design culture. At completion, a total of twelve acres of new public space, featuring Convention Center Park, 21st Street Park, Collins Canal Park and pedestrian-friendly Streetscapes on Washington Avenue and Convention Center Drive, will complete the $620-million-dollar Convention Center renovation by Fentress Architects, creating a “green civic heart” and re-stitching the convention center its surrounding environment.
