Clapham Centre at Lambeth College
CLAPHAM CENTRE, LAMBETH COLLEGE
The new sixth form centre at Clapham for Lambeth College has opened to staff and students. The building includes performance space, flexible teaching studios, a library, and an open breakout area which acts as an environmental buffer dividing the learning space and the performing arts base.
Two bridges cross the breakout area, and contribute to the building’s connectivity and sense of animated space. The bridge at first floor level links the performing arts base with the dance studios in the teaching space. The other bridge is at third floor linking the library with the information learning technology base. From these bridges, extensive views across Clapham Common are gained. An external courtyard between new and existing buildings forms another informal area for gathering.
Designed to feel open and accessible with a reinforced social identity and very strong sense of place, the centre is a microcosm of the real world with design studios, classrooms and meeting/common rooms. This accommodation is linked to the central entry point of the new college by a glazed gatehouse pavilion and courtyard shared between the new sixth form centre and the existing college. The elevational materials counterpoint the building’s setting with the organic drum shape of the performing arts base wrapped in brick with an artist’s garden for student use above with spectacular views across the common.
This new building forms the first phase of our work for Lambeth College who are redeveloping their further education college across campuses at Brixton, Clapham and Vauxhall. The distinctive design of the sixth form centre at Clapham places the new building in the centre of the existing campus as a welcoming beacon to the community, and as diverse in its mix of material, form and colour as the ethnic mix of age, ability and background as the students who attend.

£61 million redevelopment of its sites at Brixton, Clapham and Vauxhall.
The first phase saw the construction of a new sixth form building at the Clapham Centre, positioned at the front of the site on Clapham Common South Side.
The new sixth form building provides state-of-the-art teaching accommodation in an imposing five storeyed structure that has been designed by one of the UK’s leading architectural firms, BDP. Specialist facilities have been developed for Performing Arts and Creative Studies, and there will be modern Information & Communications Technology ICT throughout the building. The Clapham Centre includes the addition of new science laboratories, greatly improved student services, extensive refurbishment and the development of a new sports hall at the rear.
Within the next five years the Lambeth College estate will have been transformed significantly and will be able to provide both staff and students with consistently high quality and flexible accommodation across all academic programme areas.
