BuckleyGrayYeoman’s Channing School gets the green light

Design: BuckleyGrayYeoman Architects

BuckleyGrayYeoman Architects’ £6.5m plans for Channing School in Highgate have been granted planning permission by the London Borough of Haringey. The designs for the leading independent day school will add two buildings to the school’s estate, significantly improving Channing School’s facilities whilst remaining sensitive to, and building upon, its rich architectural and educational heritage.

BuckleyGrayYeoman’s scheme positions the new buildings nearby the existing school and uses their orientation to define a new ‘village green’ that will form the heart of the school, with landscaped play spaces and covered walkways to connect the school’s departments. In addition to the new buildings, which will house sports facilities and teaching accommodation, the existing Founders’ Hall building will be refurbished, converting it into a facility for music and the performing arts.

Set within a conservation area, the scale of new buildings for the sport hall, changing rooms and new teaching facilities have been designed to remain sensitive to the adjacent listed buildings on campus. These new additions take the shape of a simple series of pitched forms that echo the structure of the Founders’ Hall to the north, whilst also framing views of Channing School’s stepped landscape to the north east.

A simple palette of stone, brick and tiled roofs has been used throughout the new buildings, with the roof tiles and brick similar in tone to achieve a unified, sculptural form. Portland Stone is used to create a strong base to the buildings, with bronze inserts incorporated on the balconies and the southern end of the sports hall buildings to further animate the structure.

The Founders’ Hall buildings, adjacent to the new additions to the school’s estate, will be transformed into a state-of-the-art performing arts and music department. The foundations of the building have been excavated to create more space for the retractable seats that will create more capacity for the school’s auditorium.

Paul White, Director at BuckleyGrayYeoman, said: “The scheme’s progression is the culmination of two years of design development in close consultation with the client. We have designed a scheme that stitches together the school’s heritage with new, confident architecture and a campus plan that reflects and enriches the real sense of community at Channing.”
