The London School of Architecture will open this October in Academic Partnership with London Metropolitan University

The London School of Architecture, which holds charity status, is delighted to announce its academic partner London Metropolitan University.

The School offers a unique two-year programme through an innovative financial and educational model, which aims to make architectural education more accessible while bringing together industry and academia.

The LSA is working with the Cass Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design at London Metropolitan University to offer the LSA Diploma in Architecture as a validated course. The programme will be delivered by world-renowned practising architects and tutors and is supported by 35 industry partners.

Will Hunter, LSA Founder / Director, comments: “After three years of development, I am excited that the London School of Architecture is now open for applications. It is great to be working with London Metropolitan on this exciting new venture. With an incredible hit list of London practices teaching there, the Cass has staked out much of the territory that interests the LSA, from urban politics and the agency of the architect to the craft and precision of building beautifully. We look forward to many years of creative overlap as the partnership develops”.

Robert Mull, Dean of the Cass Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design at London Metropolitan University, comments: “We are very pleased to be able to support the LSA through validation and look forward to a partnership that will benefit students, London and the architectural culture more generally. The LSA’s commitment to working with practice perfectly matches our own and it is natural that we should collaborate. Together we can offer students more varied routes into practice and work together to address issues of increasing student debt and fear of debt”.

The London School of Architecture is an independent and charitable institution that brings together practice and academia to offer architectural education that is empowering, relevant and accessible.

The school offers a distinctive two-year postgraduate programme with academic partner London Metropolitan University that is delivered by world-renowned architects and tutors and is supported by over 35 practice partners.

Almost as fast as the streets of London are changing, the landscape of architectural education is being reconfigured. Change is part of the reality of London; cranes dot the horizon and gaping holes appear as part of the impulse for new development and infrastructure.

The London School of Architecture will be part of this shifting landscape, a new school for a new century and a new London. An ambitious yet ultimately benign project, the LSA arises out of ebbing state support for architectural education.

Government cuts to arts-related learning failed to recognise the important contribution of the arts to the economy. This has put students on university courses under immense pressure, both financially and academically. Exaggerated costs undermine the passion and commitment that typically develops over architecture’s five years of study.

As if to reverse this decline and be something of an exemplar, this new school grasps a handful of radical ideas: firstly, independence from the usual relationship with the university system; secondly, a modern and meaningful exchange with practice; and thirdly, a ‘cost-neutral’ financial model for its students.

Once this school gets underway and as its name suggests, this new reality will unfold in dialogue with London the evolving city. I believe both the capital and architecture will be the better for it, and am proud to contribute to this venture from the very beginning.
