M – BMW Sculpture at Goodwood Festival of Speed 2022

The Central Feature for this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed marks the 50th anniversary of perhaps the most emotive single letter in automotive history – ‘M’. Created in 1972, to spearhead the company’s racing programme, BMW’s Motorsport Division has become a colossus on both road and track. The M badge and multi-coloured stripes have adorned winners in every category BMW has tackled, as well as some of the most iconic road cars of all time.

This year’s sculpture consisting of 52 tonnes of square-sectioned tubular steel was designed by Gerry Judah. It focuses on five cars to illustrate the history of the brand, as well as shining a light on its future.

Beginning with the car that started a legend, the 3.0 CSL ‘Batmobile’, it also features the M1 Procar, which spawned the greatest one-make series in history, the Le Mans winning V12 LMR, the E90 WTCC, which dominated the World Touring Car Championship, and finally, moving the story into the future, the brand new BMW M Hybrid V8 LMDh prototype, which is seen for the very first time here at Goodwood this weekend, ahead of its planned race debut in 2023.

A fitting celebration of a landmark anniversary.
