The Danish Rock Museum in Roskilde
A chance to see at The Danish Museum of Rock Music in Roskilde, Denmark, today. As part of the Golden Days Festival the museum will be open for a presentation about the cultural heritage considerations of a museum that is in the making. The museum is still under construction and due to be completed at the end of 2015.

Ground Breaking for Danish Rock Museum in Roskilde

Today the Danish Rock Museum, MVRDV and COBE together with Wessberg engineers and LIWplanning start construction of the new home for the Danish Rock Museum in Roskilde. The museum, which offers visitors an adventurous rock music experience, will open its doors in 2015. It is the first building of ROCKmagneten, a larger rock music district consisting of three new buildings and a refurbished factory. Roskilde is the location of the annual Roskilde Festival, the largest North European culture and music festival.
The Danish Rock Museum (DRM) is the main focus of the new Roskilde ROCKmagneten that over the coming years will be developed into a community for artists, musicians and other creative professionals. The new building is located between the old industrial halls that previously housed a concrete factory. It is characterized by its twenty meter cantilever over the main entrance and an outer façade of anodized gold aluminium pyramids.
‘We translated the aesthetics of rock music into an architectural experience. The exuberant metal façade for example gives a new meaning to the word metal-stud in architecture. The combination of gold and red velvet embodies the glamorous side of rock music.’ says Jacob van Rijs, co-founder and principal architect of MVRDV.
‘The Danish Rock Museum is a building that is both the epitome of Musicon and at the same time a breath of fresh air in the neighborhood. It will be a dramatic and iconic building, which sits upon and between the old characterful factory structure.’ says Dan Stubbergaard, owner and creative director of COBE.
The building with a surface of 3100m2 over 5 floors features a large exhibition hall, flexible auditorium, café, museum shop, administration offices and a lobby. The Danish Rock Museum is a mix of a traditional museum and an adventure: the museum will be equipped with interactive production rooms, exhibition facilities, recording studio, library and research facilities.
The foyer of the museum will in time not only provide access to the museum but to the whole ROCKmagneten and can also be used as an outdoor concert stage. Performances can either face the large public plaza on one side or the refurbished industrial halls on the other.
The masterplan foresees transforming a 45.000m2 former industrial site into a new, dense neighbourhood, including the renovation of 8.000m2 of historic factory halls, organized around a plaza for events. Three new volumes will be added on top of the halls: The 11.000m2 ROCKmagneten consisting of The Danish Rock Museum, The Roskilde Festival Folk Music School and accompanying student housing, and the headquarters of the annual Roskilde Rock Festival.
MVRDV won the competition for the Danish Rock Museum together with Danish co-architect COBE in 2011. The DRM team further consists of Wessberg engineering, Norconsult fire safety and LIWplanning landscape architects. The building will be realised by B. Nygaard Sørensen A/S contractors.
The official ground breaking ceremony for the Rock Museum will be held on Monday the 30th June at 13:00h. Danish Minister of Culture Marianne Jelved, Mayor of Roskilde Joy Mogensen and CEO of Realdania Jesper Nygård will break ground. The event features live music by Nelson Can, various musical activities and provides information about Rockmagneten and the construction process.

There is a tendency to view museum buildings as simplistic containers, buildings consisting of an all encompassing form where gallery spaces often have little connection to the surrounding exterior context. In the design of the Denmark’s Rockmuseum we have taken a different approach to this somewhat tired strategy. We have also concluded that the relatively small required area will not yield a building of the required monumentality on the site.
In this light we have for the most part, dislodged the different activities of the museum from another. We have organized them in a vertical configuration that works well in the flat landscape of the Musicon site, and have surrounded the different galleries with lots of open spaces. We have designed a museum building that is as much about being outside as inside.
Four terraces are distributed over three floors of the museum. These outdoor spaces are configured in a way as to complement the more enclosed and static exhibitions of the galleries by becoming living temporary exhibitions. The terraces are open canvases, where temporary structures can be erected. They are areas for gatherings, performances, cinema al fresco, and relaxation.

ROCKmagneten : MVRDV and COBE win Danish Rock Museum competition in Roskilde
(Roskilde, 30 September 2011) The MVRDV and COBE scheme for the transformation of a former concrete factory into a multifunctional creative hub was chosen winner of an international design competition. The masterplan proposes an informal transformation of the 45.000m2 site into a dense neighborhood, incl. 8.000m2 existing factory halls, organized around a plaza for events.
Three new volumes will be added on top of the halls: The 11.000m2 ROCKmagneten consists of The Danish Rock Museum, The Roskilde Festival Folkschool incl. student housing, and the headquarters of the famous Roskilde Rock Festival. They share program in a public creative communal house. The museum with a total of 3.000m2 will be completed as the first phase in 2014.

The site is located between Roskilde city centre and the Festival grounds of the annual rock festival. The brief demanded preservation halls of the former concrete factory Unicon and the informal character of the site which is currently used by artists, skaters and musicians. How to organise liberty, creativity and informality?
The main idea is to create contrast by preserving the existing fabric as much as possible and positioning the new volumes above the existing halls. The masterplan defines areas for future buildings and temporary pavilions around a large event plaza connecting the halls and the ROCKmagneten with the main street. As a result Unicon becomes Musicon.

The old industrial halls will be insulated and opened for daylight but keep their rough character. The big open spaces inside the halls will then be interconnected and partly filled with elements of the ROCKmagneten’s public program and partly consist of ‘undefined’ space where temporary activities, events, exhibitions or the unplanned can take place.
The halls function as the heart of the creative hub for the Musicon area. Three new volumes will be added on top of the halls. The Danish Rock Museum (3.000m2) is the main focus of the masterplan with a facade of gold colored spikes. The exhibition concept of the new museum is based on the rock star experience, like ‘the rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust’.
Visitors can arrive by limo on a red carpet, stand in line to get a ticket and then enter the main exhibition hall through a stage elevator. The descend down through the bar marks the exit of the museum. The foyer of the museum not only provides access to the whole ROCKmagneten but can also be used as an outdoor concert stage, performing to either the big event plaza or the halls.
The Roskilde Festival Headquarter is an office block on top of one of the factory halls shaped as a stack of loud speakers with a black rubber facade. Some speakers are real and can be used for concerts on the plaza.
The Roskilde Festival Folkschool will occupy one of the halls with rooms for lectures, study, lounges etc. positioned around an open space containing a fireplace. A 3-level circular volume on top of the halls contains 80 double rooms for students.

The ambition is to create a green machine; based on the smart combination of proven technologies the buildings will act in accordance with the environmental vision of Roskilde Festival. The annual rock festival is the biggest in Northern Europe and organised as a charity which donates its profit. Bands such as U2, R.E.M., Coldplay, Pet Shop Boys, Prince, Rammstein and Robbie Williams perform to an enthusiastic crowd from all over Europe. MVRDV and COBE conceived the plan with Arup engineering, Wessberg engineers, LIW planning landscape architects and Transsolar for climate and energy.

Roskilde Incineration Line Building The board of KARA/Noveren have signed a contract with Erick van Egeraat for the realization of their new Roskilde incineration line.

Another Roskilde building on e-architect:
Erick van Egeraat won the design-competition for this incinerator in 2008. Due to complete in 2013, the facility will process a large part of the local waste. This process produces both electricity and heating for the Roskilde district. Erick van Egeraat’s client, KARA/Noveren, is Denmark’s leading waste to energy supplier.
Dutch Architect Erick van Egeraat has won the international competition for the design of a new incineration line in Roskilde, Denmark. Local waste management company Kara/Noveren sought an iconic expression for the otherwise functional architecture of its next generation incineration line. Due to its large scale, the incinerator is destined to become an outstanding structure in the wide and open landscape of the Roskilde area. After its completion in 2013, the facility will produce both electricity and heating for the Roskilde district.
