AIM ARCHITECTURE ARE THE OVERALL WINNERS OF THIS YEAR’S AR FUTURE PROJECT AWARDS

AIM Architecture are crowned the overall winner of the 20th edition of the AR Future Project Awards, as well as picking up the award for Hotels and Leisure for their FX Mayr Wellness Eco Retreat in Wenzhou, China.

The Jeu d’Esprit award is won by OPEN Architecture for their work on the Sun Tower in Yantai, China while the Sustainability Prize is awarded to Zaha Hadid Architects for their Forest Green Rovers Eco Park Stadium in Stroud, UK.

Other award winners include Stantec in the Cultural Regeneration category for their work on Musée du Fleuve in Niamey, Niger; Condition_Lab in the Residential category for their Mutating House project in Hunan Province, China; Acton Ostry Architects Inc. in the Offices/office-led development award for their work on Industrial Long Wood in Vancouver, Canada.

Combined, the winners and all the finalists in this year’s AR Future Project Awards showcase examples of innovative and outstanding architecture that successfully respond to the development brief and also take into consideration the full impact and contribution they will make on the communities around them.

This year’s judges included Christina Seilern, Roger Zogolovitch, Peter Stewart, Jeremy Melvin and Paul Finch.

This high-rise office design for BASF SE in Ludwigshafen, Germany was awarded the prestigious ‘Overall Winner’ prize at the conclusion of this year’s Architectural Review MIPIM Future Projects Awards ceremony.

The 26.000 sqm (gross) project, which was also successful in the Offices category of the awards, is currently in the planning phase.

The MIPIM Architectural Review Future Projects Awards awards cover twelve categories from old and new to residential, and tall buildings to sport and stadiums.

MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards – call for entries

1 November 2013 – The organisers of the annual MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards have called for entries into their 2014 competition, with the deadline for submissions confirmed as 13 December 2013.

Now in their twelfth year, the awards are the only competition focusing exclusively on future projects. They celebrate excellence in unbuilt or incomplete projects spanning across twelve categories. The awards take place at MIPIM, the global property fair, which attracts over 20,000 delegates to Cannes. With a strong focus on creativity, these awards are a chance to showcase projects that are examples of fine architecture, but have also responded to the client’s development brief, and considered the way in which they will impact and contribute to the community around them.

Last year’s winners included Doha City Tennis Stadium (Qatar) by Arup Associates; Estádio do Maracanã (Rio de Janeiro) by Daniel H. Fernandes; Autopia (Turkey) by Gokhan Avcioglu & Dara Kirmizitoprak; D Hotel (India) by Sanjay Puri; and the Breathing Tower (China) by Skidmore Owings and Merrill’s, which was the overall 2013 winner.

This year’s twelve award categories have now been confirmed – ten of which can be entered directly, including:

In our very first year back in 2003 we showcased Foster & Partner’s 30 St Mary’s Axe, more popularly known by the Gherkin epithet. Last year, several of our category winners were under construction.”

The winning projects will be honoured at a prize giving ceremony held during MIPIM on 12 March 2014, the hot ticket event for architects and their clients during MIPIM. All winners receive a free pass to MIPIM and all winning projects will be displayed on the MIPIM Architectural Review Future Projects website mipimarfutureprojects.com

11th Annual MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards Winners

SOM’S LANDMARK ‘BREATHING TOWER’ NAMED OVERALL WINNER OF 11TH ANNUAL MIPIM AR FUTURE PROJECT AWARDS

Skidmore Owings and Merrill’s ‘Breathing Tower’, a landmark 75 story building in Wujiang, China, has been awarded both the coveted Overall Winner prize and the Tall Buildings category accolade, in the eleventh annual MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards competition.

Breathing Tower – aka Greenland Group Suzhou Center:

The Greenland Group Suzhou Center is designed to address poor air quality in Wujiang, incorporating a 30-storey tall operable window in the tower’s atrium, which invites cool air flow during summer months from the seasonal prevailing winds, and floods the interior spaces with natural light.

The “lung” of the building is designed to facilitate mixed mode ventilation in the lobbies and public spaces, providing a fresh air supply source. The building is also expected to achieve 60 percent savings in energy consumption compared to a conventional high rise.

The tower has been designed for a prominent location along Taihu lake in the Jiangsu Province of China. The mixed-use tower includes office, residential, retail and hotel uses.

The project was selected as the Overall Winner by an independent panel of expert judges, who noted that the project demonstrates “a confident control of form and the mix of uses within. It demonstrates skilful integration within a stimulating and efficient strategy”.

In addition, ‘Sanskriti’ a drawing board project in Jaipur, India by Sanjay Puri for the Arg Group received the Commended Award in the Tall Buildings category.

The MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards uniquely celebrate un-built or incomplete design projects, and are intended to showcase fine architecture and creativity, and the response to the client development brief. The awards are well established as the main platform for celebrating exemplar architecture at the annual MIPIM property market in Cannes.

This year, architectural projects from around the world competed in a total of eleven open categories, with five additional awards decided on from among all the entries, including a Sustainability award and four Judges Special Recognition awards.

This year’s judging panel included Peter Stewart: Architect and planning consultant, Principal, Peter Stewart Consultancy; Dr Sutherland Lyall: Author and critic, former Buildings Editor of the Architects’ Journal; and Roger Zogolovitch: Architect and client, chairman of Solidspace. Paul Finch: Editorial Director, The Architectural Review & The Architects’ Journal, and Chair and Director of Design Council CABE, officiated over the judging panel.

Paul Finch, director of the awards, said, “It’s been another impressive competition in 2013, and there have been some truly stand out projects submitted from every corner of the globe.”

As with the previous year, we’ve seen huge success from architects and projects in the Middle East and Turkey, which is not only an interesting trend but also shows where some of the finest and most creative design projects are currently coming from. For Turkey in particular, this really is their year. MIPIM itself has bestowed the Country of the Year accolade on them, and their success in our awards will I’m sure form a significant part of those celebrations”.

The awards will be presented during a gala ceremony and dinner held at JW Marriott, Cannes on 13th March. The awards ceremony is firmly established as the central architecture event of the week in Cannes, and is MIPIM’s largest sit-down dinner.
