The awards program, the most prestigious in the United States, honors new skyscrapers, commercial buildings, urban plans, private residences, and real estate projects that achieve a high standard of excellence in design, construction, planning, and sustainability and promote the best practice in all types of real estate development for the private and public sectors, including new skyscrapers, high rises, corporate and institutional buildings, commercial projects, city planning, restorations and adaptive reuse, religious and civic buildings, and interiors.

“The American Architecture Awards program,” states Christian Narkiewicz-Laine, Museum President of The Chicago Athenaeum, “showcases the best of new American building design and urban designoriented research by the nation’s foremost visionary designers.” “The American projects selected by the Greek jury exhibit conceptual strengths that solve critical aesthetic, civic, urban, and social concerns, as well as the requisite functional, environmental and sustainability concerns.”

The American Architecture Awards, founded 15 years ago, is a centerpiece of The Chicago Athenaeum and the European Centre’s efforts to identify and promote best practices in all types of architectural development and to bring a global focus to light of the best new designs from the United States. It is the only national and global program of its kind. Throughout the program’s history, all types of projects have been recognized for their excellence, including office, residential, recreational, urban/mixed-use, industrial/office park, commercial/retail, new community, rehabilitation, private residences, and public projects and programs.

This year’s jury consisted of Greek architecture professionals: Agnes Couvelas, Agnes Couvelas Architects (Athens); Aristotelis Dimitrakopoulos, Aristotheke Eutectonics (Athens); Eleni Georgiadi, Zege Architects (Athens); Minas Kosmidis, Architecture In Concept (Thessaloniki); Stella Pieri, PierisArchitects (Athens); Pieros Pieris, PierisArchitects (Athens); and Takis Tavaniotis, BETAPLAN (Athens).

“This competition and accompanying exhibition,” states Juror Agnes Couvelas, “are a welcome opportunity to note the global trends in todayʼs architectural industry. The use of contextual parameters and the implementation of sustainable strategies in design prevailed next to aesthetics and originality.”

“This awards program, “ states jury member Eleni Georgiadi, “enforces good design as well as a thought provoking interaction between architects in different places of the world.”

“The idea of holding the jury in a foreign country each year is superb,” states Aristotelis Dimitrakopoulos. “It promotes cultural exchange and communication that is incredibly valuable particularly because of the impossibility of direct exposure to foreign cultures given the geographic isolation of the U.S. It is also significant that the jury includes a full range of age groups, a critical characteristic in an era of massive transformations in design, in trends of urban development as much as in the range of tools for visual representation.”

“It is clear that projects directed to sites outside the continental U.S. are more adventurous, progressive and dynamic. It becomes evident that further attention to the study of the urban scale would be of utmost importance for the troubled American city; perhaps nation-wide young-architects’ ideascompetition series that trigger a broader culture of urban thinking and relevant architectural production would generate the necessary momentum.”

The elite group of buildings and urban planning projects selected by the jury will be premiered at the 14th International Biennial of Architecture Buenos Aires from September 19 through October 15, 2013 at Centro Cultural Recoleta in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The exhibition is entitled The City and the World and combines the The International Architecture Awards 2013 with The American Architecture Awards 2013.

After Buenos Aires the exhibition is scheduled to travel in Europe, opening at The European Centre’s Contemporary Space Athens in Athens, Greece.

A catalogue, Global Design + Urbanism, accompanies the exhibition published by Metropolitan Arts Press Ltd.

The deadline for the 2014 American Architecture Awards is February 1, 2014.
