Retail design guru garners industry honors for latest Bloomingdale’s design, and looks forward to a banner year of international work
Kevin Kennon Architects PC (KKA), the firm renowned for its groundbreaking work with the biggest names in retailing, celebrates a landmark year that saw its practice grow in locations around the globe.
The studio, known for its deft merging of innovative design and corporate identity, and a long-time partner with retail powerhouses Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s, expanded its scope with several overseas projects. Prime among these was a four-level store for luxury brand Felix B. Maduro in the $360 million Soho Mall located in Panama City. With inventive planning, KKA transformed a disorganized existing space into an engaging shopping experience that sets the standard for upscale merchandising in the fast-growing capital city.
Accolades and Awards
The year also brought additional professional recognition to KKA. This month, the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) announced the winners of the 2016 U.S. Design and Development Awards competition, which rewards excellence, innovation, and creativity in the American retail real-estate industry. KKA received a Commendation in the Retail Store Design category for its design of the Bloomingdale’s branch in Palo Alto, California; the firm’s design for the Glendale Galleria was a finalist in the Renovations/Expansions category.

Earlier in the year, KKA was named a finalist in the Urban Land Institute’s Excellence in Development awards program. The firm’s work at Macy’s historic New York City flagship store at Herald Square was singled out in the Excellence in Repositioning or Redevelopment category.
These recent awards continue the established history of KKA as a winner of numerous industry honors. For five consecutive years, the firm has been recognized by ICSC for its work with Bloomingdale’s, including two “VIVA Best of the Best” awards in 2013 and 2015. Kevin Kennon has designed and developed more than 20 Bloomingdale’s branches and ten flagship stores across the country.
Looking Ahead
In conjunction with retailing giant Bejing Hualian Group (BHG), KKA is developing two new properties whose dynamic designs will create a social- and shopping-based environment never before seen in China. A new mall in Taiyuan, Shanxi is a six-story structure covering 645,835 square feet. In the province of Anhui, the capital city of Hefei will be home to a four-story, 538,195-square-foot mall, as well as an existing 20-story office tower. As places that bridge shopping with social interaction, these plazas form transitional zones that are an innovation in Chinese urban planning.
