Reduce Basement Dampness with a Dehumidifier

Reduce basement dampness guide

Are you seeing mold growth on your basement walls? If so, don’t despair. A basement dehumidifier can help reduce dampness in your basement. Your basement’s high humidity level is the main reason for moisture. Because basements are often underground, humidity can affect them more than other rooms in the house.

You can prevent basement damage by addressing the humidity issue. A basement dehumidifier is the best investment you can make. You have other options, but none that will work long-term. You will soon feel dampness again as the humidity increases.

Measure the basement to determine the best basement dehumidifier for you. Some dehumidifiers only cover a small area. Some dehumidifiers cover an extensive area. It is essential to choose a unit that covers precisely the basement area.

Knowing the size of your basement will help you choose the right dehumidifier. Let me know if you need help sizing your dehumidifier.

Dehumidifier

Let’s say that a basement has a 500-square-foot area. A dehumidifier will remove approximately 10 pints of water per day in moderately damp conditions. A unit that can remove 12 pints daily is required for very humid areas. A team that can fire between 14 and 15 pints of water per day is necessary if the room is very wet. You will need a unit capable of removing 17-20 pints per day if the area is extremely wet.

You will need to choose a dehumidifier with the correct capacity rating based on the size of your basement. The same principle can be applied to all rooms. The basements will have higher humidity levels than other rooms.

There are basement dehumidifiers available that can cost more than a thousand dollars. These units are more efficient and have more capacity. These units are needed for large basements and industrial purposes.

It is crucial to consider the energy efficiency of the dehumidifier you select. I have found home basement dehumidifiers that are very efficient in energy consumption.

·    You must use a pump set to drain water from buckets daily

The pump set drains the water automatically. The unit is on autopilot, so you don’t need to do much. Imagine going to the basement every time you need to drain the water. It is a lot of work. You can drain the water yourself if you get a pump set with your unit. The water can be emptied into your garden or anywhere else you prefer.

High Capacity

Basement use is best when the unit has a larger capacity. A team that can remove large quantities of water daily is essential if you have a large basement or store valuable goods.

If your area’s humidity is moderately high, a 25-pint or 40-pint dehumidifier will not work well for basement usage. You can use a smaller dehumidifier if the humidity is low and the problem is only in your basement. If you use it, your basement must be smaller.

A basement dehumidifier is the best option if your area has a humid climate. It can remove between 50 and 70 pints of moisture per day. This unit can also be used in large basements.

Automatically Turns On

Power outages are expected. Most basement dehumidifiers available on the market don’t automatically turn on after a power cut. This is a problem I have seen in many dehumidifiers, and it can be pretty annoying.

You must manually go to the basement to turn on the dehumidifier each time the power goes out. You will have problems when you return from vacation or if you forget to do this once. I’ve had it happen to me, and it was terrible. I urge you to choose a basement humidifier with an auto-turn-on feature.
