COVID-19 Made These Home Renovations Popular Among Homeowners

29 Nov 2020

You don’t need us to say it, but the pandemic has thrown everything out of whack. People are working from home. Small businesses have shut down. Stay at home mandates could be on the horizon – again.

Covid-19 made these home renovations popular

Folks that are stuck at home are tired of looking at the same four walls and they want something new. Not only do they want something new, the pandemic has shifted the things that homeowners and buyers alike wish their homes had.

Homelight’s Q3 2020 survey shows these 4 renovation projects as being the most popular reno projects among homeowners during this pandemic. If you’re itching for a change, you may want to consider these!

COVID-19 Made These House Renovations Popular

  1. Private suites for loved ones

If we’ve learned anything, COVID has rendered nursing homes and retirement communities unsafe for our elderly loved ones. As a result of this, more and more elderly folks are living with their children.

For those who want to give their loved ones more privacy and a place to call their own often look for something called an in-law suite. It has a private bathroom and bedroom, but sometimes they’ll be like a full-on studio apartment complete with a kitchenette, sitting/dining area, bedroom and bathroom.

This isn’t going to be a cheap or easy project – especially if you’re doing a complete studio addition. However, it will be worth it in the end because you’ll know your loved ones are safe and will be cared for.

  1. Patios, decks, and swimming pools

It’s amazing how much we take the great outdoors for granted! Outdoor living and entertaining spaces are popular right now because they give people a chance to get some fresh air, bond with family, and even get some exercise.

If you have an existing deck or patio, you’re ahead of the game! Just do some power washing, staining the wood and general clean up and you’re good to go. Building a deck and patio from scratch might be outside of your skillset, so always hire a licensed and insured contractor. That goes for installing a pool.

  1. Clearly defined rooms with… DOORS!

For the longest time, didn’t it feel like people on home improvement shows were ripping down every interior wall except for bedrooms and bathrooms? Well, open floor plans aren’t necessarily in vogue at the moment. People want privacy! They want to be able to shut the door and get some space from other household members. For these reasons, homeowners are starting to erect interior walls again and buyers are straying away from open floor plans.

If you’re considering adding walls to your existing open floor plan, again, hire a contractor!

  1. One or more home offices

Working remotely or doing distance learning is pretty much a common thing for most households nowadays, but every household may not have a home office where they can work undistracted. Some people may work in their bedrooms, at the dining room table or even in the living room.

This may be fine and well if you live alone or you can tune out distractions, but a lot of people really want a home office. Home offices give you privacy and they give you a place to store everything you or the kids need to get their work done. Plus at the end of the day, it’s nice to close the door and forget about it.

Creating a home office can be as simple as clearing out a spare room and putting in a desk and some bookshelves, but it can get as elaborate as adding built-in bookshelves, turning the closet into an organization closet and so on. The cost of this project will depend on what you decide to do, but it’ll be worth it in the end!
