St John’s Place tower at former Granada Studios

Simpson Haugh & Partners’ proposals for the redevelopment of a key part of Manchester’s St John’s regeneration area have been given the go-ahead by councillors, reports Building Design.

A 52-storey tower housing 287 apartments above a 15-storey hotel is the centrepiece for the scheme, which covers the former Granada Studios site where soap opera Coronation Street was filmed until production moved to ITV’s new MediaCityUK studios.

Leeds Hotel Building Conversion

Simpson Haugh & Partners has won planning to convert a 1960s office building in the centre of Leeds into a hotel, reports Building Design today.

The 182-bed development is the first phase of a proposed mixed-use community on Bridge Street planned by a Singapore-led consortium.

The wider project aims to extend the city centre beyond the inner ring road by creating a new urban destination on a 1ha site formerly occupied by British Gas.

The scheme refurbishes a podium and 12-storey tower which will be re-clad in a terracotta and aluminium.

Manchester based SimpsonHaugh and Partners will lead on the design of the £30 m plus Engineering Innovation Centre (EIC) in collaboration with Reiach and Hall Architects. BDP, which also has an office in Manchester and was founded in Preston, has been appointed to provide the engineering expertise for the project.

Ian Simpson Architects has officially changed its name to SimpsonHaugh and Partners LLP.

The name change publicly acknowledges the unique and significant contribution that co-founding Partner, Rachel Haugh, has made to the successful growth of the practice. It also reflects the new structure of the practice as an LLP, and the wider ownership of the practice by its senior leadership team, vital in strengthening the next phase of the practice’s evolution.

Over the last 27 years, SimpsonHaugh and Partners has enjoyed considerable success, contributing to city-wide regeneration and developing an impressive portfolio of built projects.
