The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting occurred on December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, United States, when a 20-year-old fatally shot 20 children between six and seven years old, as well as six adult staff members.

Prior to driving to the school, he shot and killed his mother at their Newtown home. He then committed suicide after the shooting.

Conceived as a series of concentric circles, SWA’s design for The Clearing (see the designer’s news page – www.swagroup.com) will draw visitors into the five-acre site near the new school, guiding them from a small parking lot (accessible via a gated entrance drive) to an open-air pavilion where they can prepare to meander through the memorial.

The path has no true beginning or end, to acknowledge that the healing process according to the designers.

The incident was the deadliest mass shooting at either a high school or grade school in U.S. history and the fourth-deadliest mass shooting by a single person in U.S. history.

The shooting prompted renewed debate about gun control in the United States, including proposals for making the background-check system universal, and for new federal and state gun legislation banning the sale and manufacture of certain types of semi-automatic firearms and magazines with more than ten rounds of ammunition.

Intersecting walking paths, including footbridges over two existing ponds, will lead to a central clearing, where an American sycamore tree will be planted on an island in a 22-foot reflecting pool.

Twenty-six panels of granite encircle the water feature, each bearing the name of a victim.

The 10-member commission received nearly 200 submissions. They will recommend the design for official approval on September 4.

The aim is to commence works by Spring 2019, then dedicate the memorial on the seventh anniversary of the tragedy on December 14, 2019.
