Designed by Chapman Taylor, Deniz Mall, the much-anticipated new retail, leisure and entertainment redevelopment concept for the former Entertainment Centre, has soft-opened to the public in central Baku, Azerbaijan.
Design: Zaha Hadid Architects featured in today’s Google Doodle – the design of this intriguing building is a departure from the rigid and often monumental architecture of the former Soviet Union that is so prevalent in Baku. Instead, the building aspires to express the sensibilities and diversity of Azeri culture.
The design of the Heydar Aliyev Center establishes a continuous, fluid relationship between its surrounding plaza and the building’s interior. The plaza, as the ground surface; accessible to all as part of Baku’s urban fabric, rises to envelop an equally public interior space and define a sequence of event spaces dedicated to the collective celebration of contemporary and traditional Azeri culture.
Design: Autoban Studio architects. The terminal building’s contemporary interiors overturn airport conventions of cavernous space and impersonal experience: cocoons exist at the convergence of architecture and art, creating an inviting, intriguing landscape.

Broadway Malyan raises the bar with new National Gymnastics Arena in Azerbaijan
The iconic 9,000-seat National Gymnastics Arena in Baku, Azerbaijan, designed by global architecture, urbanism and design practice Broadway Malyan, has completed. The £120 m building is one of only a handful of bespoke gymnastics venues in the world.

The building is not a concert hall in the classical sense but a multi-functional indoor arena, which is intended to be a longer-term facility. Normally, event venues of comparable size, such as a football stadium, will require 4 to 5 years for design and construction.
