This project, part of the ambitious north campus plan also led by VMA, transforms the headmaster’s residence while honoring the cherished legacy it represents for the Millbrook community.

At the heart of this endeavor lies the construction of the new Anthony House, which will house the Alumni and Development Office. To make room for this vital addition, Pulling House had to be relocated 40 feet, a change that was approached with great sensitivity given the building’s sentimental value.

Originally a high Victorian farmhouse renovated by the Pulling family in 1930, the Pulling House has long been a symbol of continuity for generations of Millbrook leaders. With a commitment to a “same-but-better” philosophy, VMA reimagined Pulling House to maintain its historical essence while introducing contemporary elements.

The new design will feature familiar elements such as a gabled roof, white siding, and cubic proportions that pay homage to the original structure, ensuring that it remains a beloved part of the school’s fabric.

One of the unique challenges of creating a headmaster’s home is striking the right balance between formal entertaining spaces and private family areas. The new Pulling House will thoughtfully separate these zones to provide a comfortable, functional family life. The design cleverly incorporates two distinct entrances—one for guests and one for the family—complete with a private staircase leading to personal quarters, allowing the headmaster’s family to seamlessly navigate their daily routines of homework, play, and shared meals without interruption.

The interior design of Pulling House is where tradition meets modern lifestyle. With contemporary colors, textures, and styles enhancing its structural elegance, the space will feel both inviting and stylish. The kitchen, a hub of daily activity, combines a cozy breakfast nook with a family room, fostering moments of connection and comfort. Additionally, nostalgic accents—including salvaged mantels and doors from the original Pulling House—will serve as enduring reminders of the home’s rich history.

The new Pulling House promises to be more than just a residence; it will stand as a testament to the school’s commitment to its heritage, community, and the evolving needs of today’s families. This revitalization speaks volumes about the school’s dedication to creating a vibrant, modern learning environment while preserving the traditions that define its identity.
