A minimal beveled frame acts as a lens to both the ocean views to the south and sunsets over the bay to the north.

The unique characteristic of this site is that it affords views of both the Atlantic Ocean to the south and Shinnecock Bay to the north.

This suggested the owners’ primary program requirement: that the main spaces of the house be open to both views.

Another important program element was that the house function as a weekend resort for family and friends, providing all guests with the combination of privacy and interaction found on a large yacht.

These requirements inspired the idea of a glass box in a visually strong frame: long east to west, narrow north to south, open on the long sides to capture the views, mostly closed on the short sides to screen out houses to the east and west. The main spaces are on the upper level in order to see over the dunes.

Zoning restrictions made it impractical to locate the pool between the house and the ocean, so a courtyard scheme took shape that created the space for a pool.

A four bedroom guest wing is located on the other side of the courtyard. It is one storey in height so that its roof could be designed as a raised terrace facing the bay, on the same level as the main floor. This terrace functions as the primary entertainment area.

The materials encourage feelings of serenity, warmth, informal comfort and timelessness. Principal materials are Alabama limestone for floors and walls, Kynarfinished aluminum for the curtain wall and sliding door system, ceramic and porcelain tiles for bathroom floors and walls, epoxy for countertops and vanities, white lacquer for master bedroom floors and walls.
