Serpentine Gallery Pavilion by Peter Zumthor

The Serpentine 2011 Pavilion is due to open on 1 Jul, ddesigned by world-renowned Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. This year’s Pavilion is the 11th commission in the Gallery’s annual series, the world’s first and most ambitious architectural programme of its kind. It will be the architect’s first completed building in the UK, providing visitors with a tranquil haven for rest and reflection.

Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2011 – Peter Zumthor

Zumthor’s Pavilion centres around a hortus conclusus, a hidden inner garden, conceived by award-winning Dutch landscape designer Piet Oudolf. Exterior and interior walls with staggered doorways will offer multiple paths for visitors to follow, gently guiding them to the inner garden. The covered walkways and seating surrounding this central space will create a serene, contemplative environment from which visitors may look onto the richly planted sunlit garden, the heart and focus of the building.

This year’s Serpentine Pavilion in London is designed by Peter Zumthor. Peter Zumthor is an appropriate choice – as some of the most famous architects in the world have designed recent pavilions from Zaha Hadid to Frank Gehry, SANAA to Snøhetta and last year by Jean Nouvel.

Serpentine Sackler Gallery – Zaha Hadid

The existing grade II-listed 19th C Magazine building in Kensington Gardens is to be redeveloped by Zaha Hadid Architects to form a new cultural venue in time for 2012 Olympics.

A planning application for the Serpentine Sackler Gallery is due for submission in 2011.

The Serpentine Sackler Gallery proposal is due to the largest single donation the Serpentine Gallery has received in its 40 year history, from the The Dr Mortimer and Theresa Sackler Foundation. Previously Norman Foster designed the Sackler Gallery at the Royal Academy in central London.

Serpentine Pavilion 2011 – Peter Zumthor

Not to be confirmed until early 2011, proposed architect to design next year’s Serpentine Pavilion in London is Peter Zumthor.

Peter Zumthor born in 1943 is a Swiss architect. In 2009 he won the Pritzker Prize architects.
