DESIGN MUSEUM INVITES YOU ON A VIRTUAL TOUR OF ITS FUTURE HOME

The Design Museum invites the world to tour its future home in Kensington via an innovative digital portal

6 September 2013 – On Sunday 22 September, the new Design Museum will open its doors via an online platform called Stickyworld. For the first time, visitors can virtually explore the new museum thanks to immersive 360 degrees renders, panoramic images and plans. Users will be able to access the new Design Museum on Stickyworld on terminals located in the museum at Shad Thames or from the comfort of their home by logging on to http://designmuseum.stickyworld.com

Including an introductory video with Deyan Sudjic, Director of the Design Museum, the site offers the opportunity to virtually walk from the new museum’s entrance on Kensington High Street, into the atrium and wander down the staircase to the 194-seat auditorium, or up to the first floor – where the Sackler Library and Archive and the Swarovski Centre for Learning spaces will be located – and the second floor, where the restaurant and the permanent display of the museum’s design collection will be housed under the hyperbolic paraboloid roof that uniquely characterises the building. Users can interact within the rooms by leaving digital sticky notes with comments and ideas about the museum’s plans for its new home.

Coinciding with the Open House weekend, the launch will provide an alternative way to visit the Grade ll* listed former Commonwealth Institute building, which is currently being converted into the new Design Museum by leading designer John Pawson and is due to open in Kensington in 2015. The new Design Museum will be three times the size of the current museum and will host a wider range of exhibitions and an enhanced learning programme, as well as showcasing the museum’s permanent collection of design, which will be accessible free of charge for the first time.

Josephine Chanter, Design Museum Head of Communications, comments: ‘I’m #excited. This opportunity with Stickyworld enables the Design Museum to reach out to an ever expanding audience and not only take people into the new museum, but engage them in a dialogue about its future.’
