Farrells creates an urban oasis on Edgware Road
Lyons Place, an innovative mixed-use scheme in Northwest London comprising 76 high quality new homes, has completed. Designed by renowned London architecture practice, Farrells, on behalf of developer, Almacantar, the tenure-blind development offers a variety of townhouses, apartments and penthouses.
Situated between the quaint residential areas of Maida Vale and Little Venice, Lyons Place provides an urban oasis for its future residents. Farrells’ brief was to incorporate elements of the area’s diverse surroundings into the design, whilst creating a desirable residential scheme that supported the needs of the surrounding area. As local architects, Farrells were selected to design Lyons Place for their knowledge and emotive ties to the area and community.
The exterior of Lyons Place breaks the existing Edgware Road elevation into a series of terraced houses. The façade’s vertical recessed metal spandrels continue to break the mass and tie in nicely with the streetscape, whilst using bricks inspired by the Maida Vale area. The reinstated 1930s petrol station features a striking blue, glazed brick corner and creates an interactive frontage for the scheme, with its three larger-than-life, London-Bus-red petrol pumps.
Farrells designed Lyons Place to maximise outdoor space, with each residence benefitting from its own balcony or terrace. The building itself surrounds a landscaped courtyard, featuring seating, low level planting and a three-storey high green wall.
Additionally, to create a secure entrance for all residents in the scheme, all apartments are accessed via Lyons Place, an existing quiet residential road to the rear of the development. The scheme’s materials are hand selected and include the use of timber, natural stone and craft elements which reference the local history of artisans.
Partner and project lead at Farrells, Peter Barbalov comments: “Lyons Place is a colourful addition to Edgware Road that has been sensitively designed using complementary architectural styles. Our design contextualises the history of the area and provides much needed housing for private and affordable residents. As local architects, we were able to draw on our deep-rooted knowledge of the area and deliver a scheme that works for the local community and will provide an exceptional place to live.”
Kathrin Hersel, Property Director at Almacantar, said: “Lyons Place has been designed to offer an oasis of calm within one of the most lively and charming areas of London. Working closely with Farrells, we have created a beautifully crafted collection of homes, drawing on references from the rich cultural history of the area, and offering residents the chance to embed themselves in a vibrant local community, all within minutes of the city centre.”
