Statement by Portsmouth Football Club
Portsmouth Football Club Stadium
Portsmouth Football Club and their development partners Sellar have been working closely with Portsmouth City Council on options to fulfil the club’s ambitions for a new stadium.
The club‘s ultimate aim remains a new 40-45,000-seater stadium at Horsea Island near Port Solent, along with a multi-purpose arena and residential and retail developments to help support and fund the project.
However, over the past year it has become increasingly apparent that this may take considerably longer to achieve for the following reasons:
– New exits from the motorway for private vehicles and public transport are likely to be required
– The site is likely to need a new bridge from Tipner to Horsea Island to link the two developments and make access by foot easier
– The change to the city plan proposed by the council to accommodate the stadium will still need to be subject to an inquiry by an independent inspector appointed by the Secretary of State
– The council’s core strategy is unlikely to be adopted until mid-2011 and the club recognises the benefit of this being in place before proceeding with Horsea Island
– The issue of the ‘credit crunch’, which has affected housing and almost all other developments, as well as lenders’ attitudes to large projects
With these issues in mind the club has taken the decision to move forward with a two-stage approach.
Stage One will take place at the current Fratton site. This will include a 30,000-seater stadium supported by a major supermarket as well as a new club shop, ticket office and club offices and other enabling development, the nature of which is to be confirmed.
The proposed development will help to fund alterations to the current stadium which will include two new stands, an extension to the Fratton end and improvements to the south stand. This would entail rotating the pitch 90 degrees.
Subject to planning permission, work could be started before the end of the year, bringing the capacity of Fratton Park up to 25,000 for the start of the 2010/2011 season and 30,000 when the entire renovation is completed by the beginning of the 2011/2012 season.
At the same time we will continue to work on the major project (Stage Two) at Port Solent with a view to completion in line with the Football Association’s current World Cup bid for 2018/2022 in which Portsmouth would hope to be a World Cup city.
Once we can move to the new stadium the Fratton Park site of approximately 7.5 acres will be sold for residential development. The development team are working hard to submit a planning application for Stage One as soon as possible.
