PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Service Center
INSPIRATION:
The building form was inspired by nature and by the environment. The architects try to make a building merged into nature. It tries to maximise views of the mountains and the lake, getting people close to the water and nature.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The International Horticultural Exposition 2014 opened in Qingdao, as the primary architecture of the Expo area.
The building undertook multiple functions including circulation hub, activity center, restaurant, recreational landscape, cultural communication, etc. it merged into its surrounding landscape. A three-armed junction system was used to generate the architecture and landscape, the multiple routes system provide maximum visitor experience and accessibility.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
People enjoy the nature while eating in the restaurants, also touch the nature while walking in the outside landscape area like roof terraces, water front decks and etc.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The building is located in Qingdao, China. The design started in April, 2012, the Construction started in Feb. 2013 and finished in June 2014.
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The building is mainly made of concrete, steel, glass, and aluminium panels. Parametric design was used to generate the form of the building, BIM technology was used to ensure the building quality

Site area: 23000 m2 Floor area: 6539 m2 Building Height: 10 m Floors: 2
RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Parametric design methodology was used to generate the form, 3 armed junction system was applied. The cutting edge digital fabrication was used for the façade panel making.
CHALLENGE:
The Baiguo Mountain and the Heavenly Water lake where the named project is located have outstanding natural landscape. The design treatment of the relationship between architecture and nature is vital to the deliverance of their organic integration. Due to the unique nature of the service centers, which have to handle large circulation flow, the design has to ensure visitors from all directions can reach the service center area swiftly. The landscape architecture form and multiple routes system was applied to overcome these issues.
