Temporary Pavilion for the International Bamboo Festival in Phnom Penh, Cambodia 2017

The Shadowmaker Pavilion

The Shadowmaker Pavilion

The bamboo pavilion is located in the middle of ‘Freedom park’, which is the central location for the international bamboo festival. It is the place for holding events, performances, exhibitions, and gathering area for the visitors.

The bamboo pavilion reflects the abilities of bamboo as a building material. It is designed with a self-supporting structure which lends itself a characteristic form as the landmark for the festival. The pavilion reacts to the environment and is formed as a self-shaded bamboo structure. It also creates a functional community space for holding festival activities, as well providing the primary gathering area for the visitors.

The Shadowmaker Pavilion

Form
The Shadowmaker, as the center of the international bamboo festival, is created by a dynamic form that demon-strates the strengths of bamboo as well reacts to local weather conditions. Besides that, it defines and makes use of the pavilion space for visitors.

The main structure of the bamboo pavilion is formed by three circular rings of bamboo and weaving bamboo trunks as the sub-structure. The first ring acts as the main foundation of the entire structure. With the aim of a self-shaded pavilion, the second ring is lifted up on the south side where it can create the sun-protection for the space through inter-weaving bamboo truncks. It not only providing shade but also creates an enclosure for the pavilion space. The third ring is lifted up on the north side and acts as seats for visitors to gather and join the festival activities. On the east point where three bamboo rings come together lowers down to the ground and acts as the entrance to the bamboo pavilion.

Construction
The new bamboo landmark is formed by three rings and the supporting straight bamboo trunks, that hold the shape and create the shadow. The rings are made of bent trunks of bamboo, strapped together to make a strong and elastic braid. For spatial stiffness, each of the rings is doubled and the supporting vertical trunks are fastened in between them. Thus, the construction reflects the main characteristic of the material: flexibility and strength. It is a sustainable, self-supporting structure that works both for stretching and compression, easy and fast to mount and reuse.

Space formation
The Shadowmaker-pavilion creates two different zones on the site. The north is welcoming visitors to join the event. The weaving in the south side gives the structure impression and provides the visual and acoustic con-nection to the running activities.
