Culver City’s history as a transportation hub has profoundly shaped its architectural landscape, particularly through the adaptive reuse of its former industrial spaces. Notable examples include the Hayden Tract, which has evolved into a dynamic creative zone, and The Platform, a former industrial site now home to trendy retail and dining spots.
At the heart of Culver City, The Shay stands as a striking embodiment of this transformation, seamlessly blending the area’s industrial heritage with modern design. Designed by KFA Architects and with interiors crafted by Studio Collective, the hotel anchors the area’s evolving urban landscape.
The hotel’s design incorporates wood and steel elements throughout, honoring the city’s industrial heritage while cultivating a modern, stylish ambiance. The attention to detail is evident in features such as leather-wrapped handrails and aged metals, which complement a rich selection of locally commissioned artwork displayed throughout the property.
One of The Shay’s defining elements is its expansive 8,000 square feet of flexible meeting and event space, including a 3,550 square-foot ballroom. In addition, the hotel offers 5,000 square feet of outdoor courtyard space, ideal for events ranging from corporate meetings to social gatherings, all enhanced by Southern California’s beautiful weather. These artfully designed areas can easily be transformed into venues for entertainment launches, fashion shows, product unveilings, weddings, and other special events.
A focal point of the hotel’s design is the intimate ‘Box’ space in the lobby, accompanied by a striking custom blackened steel staircase. The space features tiered, all-birch plywood areas designed for both relaxation and productivity. ‘The Box’ is a versatile space that can adapt to a variety of activities and events, day or night.
The Shay’s connection to Culver City is further embodied in its meeting and event spaces, such as the Blackwelder Boardroom, Hayden Meeting Room, and Ivy Ballroom—all named in tribute to significant local landmarks. Additionally, the hotel’s location near rail transit, which links Culver City to Santa Monica and Downtown Los Angeles, strengthens its ties to the city’s identity. The hotel is also named after Ephraim Shay, the inventor of the Shay locomotive, which became a prominent feature of early 20th-century railroads.
The project’s proximity to rail transit – which connects Culver City to Santa Monica and Downtown Los Angeles – also contributes to the identity of the hotel. The Shay is named in honor of inventor Ephraim Shay, the creator of the once-common form of steam locomotive called The Shay.
In the early 1900s, the Pacific Electric Railway Company’s iconic Red Cars connected Los Angeles to the coast, with two lines intersecting at a junction called Ivy Park—now the area we know as Culver City.
Beyond its architectural innovation, The Shay also celebrates Culver City’s thriving arts community. As home to numerous local galleries, the city’s creative energy is infused throughout the hotel. Works by local artists are displayed in the lobby, along the elevator hallways, and in dynamic installations scattered across the property.
The Shay’s 148 guest rooms reflect a contemporary, loft-inspired design that caters to modern travelers. These spaces offer multiple work-friendly zones, keeping guests connected while providing custom community programming. The inviting and comfortable lobby serves as a vibrant gathering space, complete with a bar, an indoor fire pit, a game room, and The Box—a flexible area for both work and leisure.
Known affectionately as “The Living Room of Los Angeles,” the lobby offers a collaborative and inspiring space for locals and visitors alike. Surrounded by captivating local artwork, it provides the perfect setting for both work and relaxation.
This dedication to the arts is woven into the very fabric of The Shay. With regularly updated art installations, The Shay serves as a dynamic megaphone for Culver City’s art scene, proudly showcasing the culture and heritage of its local community.
