Australian Beach Residence

A bold robust beach house was the vision for this unique beachside site. The 10m wide x 50m deep site running east west attracted numerous design constraints. From tight setback and height constraints, to existing context constraints, to the environmental constraints the building design responds to these whilst addressing the clients brief.

The program responds to the constraints by developing a courtyard house which divides the home into two parts, providing separate living spaces for a large family and creating a private retreat away from the public street and harsh south-east winds.

The built form is conceived as an arrangement of bold forms layered with different robust materials including honed blockwork, shiplap timber and zinc panels.

The dynamic extruded forms are made possible by the integrated structural design. Complex steel portal frames and cantilevered beams act as a rigid skeletal frame covered by skins of texture. Integrated lighting design and landscape design reinforces the bold gesture this house brings to the streetscape.

The central courtyard allows for internal rooms to have more adjacent windows and cross ventilation detracting from a singular rectangular plan form full of hot rooms. Plantation pine timber frame and cladding and zinc cladding form part of the response to a sustainable designed building.

The livability and comfort of the house resonates from all members of the family. In the public realm the dynamic form of this house adds to the revitalisation of the prominent beachside esplanade.
