Many people have problems with their garage. It is either cluttered or just downright messy, and it’s not uncommon for garages to get so full that they pose a safety risk. Here are some tips on how you can organize your garage like a pro!

How to organize your garage

We’re all guilty of it. We clear a space in our garage, we pile up all of the unrelated items in there, and we close the doors for good. But before long, things have already begun to pile up and it’s out of control again. It’s time to get organized!

When people hear the word “organization,” they think about filing cabinets, color-coded notebooks or diaries, or decorative boxes and trays. But organizing isn’t just about how things look ― it’s also about making sure that everything has its place so that you can quickly replace things when you need them.

“Organizing” means different things to different people. Some folks like to decorate their garage in order to make the space more interesting and pleasant. Other people see organizing as strictly functional; they prefer to use their garage for work. Either way, the same principle applies: everything has a place and goes back there when it’s not in use. You might find that organizing your garage is easier said than done. Keeping things where you put them can be tough!

To help you get started, here are some basic guidelines on what to keep and what to throw away. Remember, if something is broken or doesn’t work anymore, get rid of it ― it’s taking up valuable space in your garage!

Shelves and cabinets

The next step is to make storage areas out of shelves and cabinets. Put things like your tools, car, and sporting goods on these shelves if possible so they don’t take up valuable floor space. If you don’t have enough shelving space, then consider adding something like Garage Cabinetry in your garage. You might also want to consider installing a pegboard wall for extra hanging space.

If you have enough floor space, then you can store large items here instead of using up valuable wall and shelf space. Most likely, these items will be seldom used because they’re too heavy or bulky to carry around or put in the car.

Key to success: be sure your storage areas are secure. It’s better to keep a few things on the floor rather than risk having them stolen because someone was able to gain access into your garage through an unsecured door or window.

What to keep

If you’re like most folks, your garage is a catchall for the things that don’t belong anywhere else. Keeping these items organized can be tricky because they might not have an obvious home. But if you take the time to sort through everything, you’ll find that it’s actually quite easy to keep those items in order!

You may also need to do some cleaning and maintenance on the stuff you want to keep. Sometimes clutter occurs because we neglect our belongings. Again, be ruthless ― if something hasn’t been used in over six months or if it doesn’t work properly anymore, get rid of it! Don’t let things just pile up― when you’re ready to get rid of an item, donate it or throw it out immediately!

If you have seasonal items that are used infrequently like yard tools or holiday decorations, make sure to put them in a place where they won’t collect dust. Consider storing these items with friends or family if your ideal storage option is unavailable.

If you don’t have anywhere for certain items, ask yourself if the item is really necessary. Have you used it in the past year? Will you use it soon? If not, get rid of it!

What to throw away

When sorting through your garage clutter, there are a few things that should go out with the trash:

  • Broken or useless items
  • Deteriorating and unsafe items
  • Electronics past their prime or that are no longer useful
  • Needless duplicate items
  • Items you’ll never use (like duplicates of sports equipment)
  • Items you haven’t used in years (including clothes or furniture you don’t plan on bringing out again this season)
