There is so much to take in when you visit the United Kingdom, but one thing that is hard to ignore are the grand buildings that can be found in the biggest cities around the country. There is no shortage of examples of fine architecture around the country, with standout pieces in cities like London, Birmingham and Manchester. But, which four impressive buildings should all visitors pay a visit to when they are next in the UK?
Buckingham Palace
It would be hard to make any visit to the UK complete without paying a visit to Buckingham Palace. It is one of the most famous landmarks not only in England, but the world. Buckingham Palace is home to the British Royal Family, and is often a meeting point at times of mourning and celebration. It has been home to the royals since 1703, when it was built for the Duke of Buckingham.
However, it wasn’t until 1761 when the first royal called it home, as King George III lived there. It has been the main London home for royals since Queen Victoria’s reign in 1837.
Royal Pavilion
Visitors to Brighton can pay a visit to a Grade I listed building, as the Royal Pavilion is one of the breath-taking pieces of architecture in the United Kingdom. It was previously used as the seaside residence of the Prince of Wales, George, before he became king in 1820.
The building looks more like something that you would come across in India, and the design is extremely similar. William IV and Victoria both also used the Pavilion as their seaside residence, before the latter decided against using it and instead opted to use Osbourne House. That decision paved the way for the landmark to be sold to Brighton & Hove City Council in 1850.
Bull Ring Birmingham
There isn’t a more iconic shopping complex in the United Kingdom than the Bull Ring. Complete with the statue of the bull outside of the shopping centre, it has become a must-see for all visitors to Birmingham. A whole day can be utilised by exploring the Bull Ring, with breathtaking views found on the balcony of Selfridges on the top floor.
The Bull Ring wasn’t always welcomed by locals during its original development, but its popularity reached new heights following the re-development in the early 2000s. It was also the first indoor shopping complex to be opened in the UK, which means a piece of history can be explored when you visit.
Radcliffe Camera
Radcliffe Camera is one of the most famous landmarks in the United Kingdom, and forms part of Oxford University. It was built between 1737 and 1749 with its primary use to house the Radcliffe Science Library.
One of the standout aspects of the Radcliffe Camera that captures the attention of visitors is just how central it is in the city, as it forms a focal point for not just the university, but also Oxford. It remains an essential part of the city to this day, with over one million searchable records found online. James Gibbs was the architect behind the design.
