Mountain Lake Shaker Farmhouse, USA
Perched on the shores of a peninsula on a mountain lake, the Mountain Lake Shaker Farmhouse captivating Shaker-inspired house is a testament to the seamless fusion of classic simplicity and contemporary luxury. Designed by the architect for his antiques-dealer mother, this architectural masterpiece effortlessly combines the essence of the Shaker philosophy with contemporary comforts, creating an idyllic retreat for modern living amid breathtaking water views.
The exterior of the house takes full advantage of its picturesque location, offering unobstructed views of the glistening lake. A harmonious blend of natural materials, such as local stone, reclaimed wood, and simple lap siding, ensures the farmhouse gracefully integrates into its scenic surroundings. Expansive windows and French doors create a seamless transition between the interior and the breathtaking outdoors, allowing the homeowners to revel in the beauty of nature.
Stepping inside is akin to entering a sanctuary of calm and serenity. The interior spaces pay homage to the timeless simplicity of Shaker design while embracing the tranquility of the lakeside setting. Light-colored walls, exposed painted beams, and a carefully curated selection of artisanal furniture evoke a sense of harmony with nature, inviting the outdoors in.
One of the most striking focal points of the house is the curved custom staircase that gracefully winds its way from the grand foyer to the upper levels of the farmhouse. Meticulously handcrafted by skilled artisans, the staircase showcases the pinnacle of fine carpentry and echoes the attention to detail found in Shaker craftsmanship.
The curved design of the staircase not only serves as an architectural marvel but also adds a touch of elegance and fluidity to the interior. As if mimicking the gentle waves of the nearby lake, the staircase’s sinuous curves evoke a sense of movement and continuity throughout the home. Its balustrade features intricately carved wooden spindles that pay homage to traditional Shaker design motifs, infusing the space with timeless beauty.
The staircase is illuminated by a cascading chandelier, suspended from the soaring ceiling above the foyer. The interplay of light and shadow adds a sense of drama, enhancing the overall ambiance of the lake. Each step invites residents and guests to ascend with a sense of anticipation, unveiling new vistas and experiences with every turn.
The farmhouse’s living areas are thoughtfully arranged to capture the essence of lakeside living. An open-concept layout seamlessly connects the kitchen, dining, and living spaces, offering breathtaking views of the shimmering waters from every angle. High vaulted ceilings covered with painted tongue and groove shiplap, create an airy ambiance, complemented by statement pendant lighting that illuminates the space with a warm glow.
The heart of the house is undoubtedly its Shaker-inspired kitchen. Bathed in natural light, the kitchen features custom cabinetry with glass-front doors, allowing homeowners to showcase treasured culinary items. A large farmhouse sink overlooks the lake, while the handcrafted fixtures add an elegant touch. The kitchen island, crowned with honed quartz, provides a delightful gathering spot for friends and family to savor meals while relishing the stunning lakeside views.
Tranquility permeates the bedrooms, each designed as a personal haven for relaxation. Shaker-style furnishings, adorned with sumptuous linens and plush throws, invite residents to unwind and soak in the beauty of the lake. Large windows in each bedroom provide an ever-changing natural tableau, enhancing the feeling of being in harmony with the surrounding environment. Custom vaulted ceilings take advantage of the space created under the steep roof, and each room features a view of the lake.
Lakeside Tranquility embraces its waterfront location with a series of inviting outdoor spaces. A spacious lakeside porch, complete with comfortable seating and dining areas, provides the perfect spot for al fresco entertaining or leisurely contemplation of the water’s edge. A stone path leads to a private dock, extending the living experience onto the shimmering lake for boating, fishing, or simply basking in the natural splendor.
The house design was a collaborative process between the architect and the client, the architect’s mom, who also happens to be an antiques dealer. Her keen eye for artistry and history influenced the interior design, infusing the home with carefully selected vintage pieces that pay homage to the Shaker philosophy. The antiques blend seamlessly with the contemporary elements, creating an ambiance of timelessness and authentic charm.
This Shaker-inspired farmhouse epitomizes the harmonious fusion of classic simplicity and contemporary luxury in a stunning lakeside setting. With meticulous attention to detail and an unwavering commitment to honoring the Shaker tradition, this architectural gem stands as a testament to the exceptional capabilities of a high-end custom residential boutique architectural practice. The collaboration between the architect and the client, an antiques dealer and the architect’s mother, adds a unique and heartfelt dimension to this exceptional retreat—a place where residents can embrace the beauty of nature and find solace in the timeless allure of Shaker-inspired design, accentuated by the awe-inspiring curved custom staircase that leaves a lasting impression on all who enter this serene lakeside haven.
