This library building in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, was designed by Toyo Ito in 1995 and completed in 2001. After a public consultation, an architectural competition was held for the design of the Mediatheque.

Helsinki University Main Library, the largest academic library in Finland is located in a historically important city block in the very heart of the city centre.
The library was built in the 1980’s and served the community well over the past decades. However the library became outdated, in need of upgrading and became too small to deal with the collection of resources available to the community for reference or borrowing.
The New Cultural Centre and Library in Karlshamn, Sweden, is designed to gather the city’s cultural functions under one roof. schmidt hammer lassen architects has just won an international competition to design this 5,000 sqm cultural centre building.
BIBLIO-Centrum – from the Greek word for book and the Latin word for center – will be Helsinki’s new “book center” or “book central”, a focal point for the most prominent facilities of the city: Parliament, the Helsinki Music Centre, the Finland Opera House, the Kiasma Museum, Sanoma House, and the central railway station.
The competition entry places a contemporary, down-to-earth public building at the heart of the metropolis, with a strong reference to the Finnish building tradition. The design shows a building entirely made of Finnish pinewood.
A place for everyone: open and accessible, usable and public. A public square animated by exhibitions, events and music. A space surrounded by some of the most important buildings of the city. It’s the cultural centre, heart and mind of the community.

Next to the mediathèque, three existing buildings – the church, the Hotel de Balay and the wall of the prison – formed an impressive and severe urban setting made up of simple lines, great mineral surfaces and imposing masses.
Shared Dreams is a proposal for the new Helsinki Library, sited at a strategic point within the city, the cultural cluster in the Töölönlahti area, with the Helsinki Music Centre, the Aalto congress centre, and the Kiasma contemporary art museum.
The Brentwood Library building has re-opened following a two-year renovation and expansion designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects. The updated library adds 30 percent more public service, collection and staff space configured on a tight site in the suburb of Etobicoke.
South Dublin County Council undertook to refurbish and extend the library in Ballyroan in 2006. Part of the brief involved refurbishing the community centre and provision of additional pastoral facilities; however it became evident early on that a separate building was required for this element.
At the same time the site will be with a vast program such as a university, hotel, marina, offices and homes more urban than any other Floriade has ever been before, it is an exemplary green city.
