Cary House, Australia

Cary House is an inner-city residence skillfully updated to reflect the evolving lifestyle of its owners and their beloved dog, Maxie. The original structure, a quaint cottage over a century old, comprised three modest bedrooms, a single bathroom, and an outdated extension housing a combined kitchen and dining area. While charming in its historical context, the home was not suited to the modern needs of its inhabitants, particularly in terms of connectivity, functionality, and the underutilized outdoor space.

The project’s initial brief centered on creating a more fluid and functional indoor-outdoor living experience that capitalized on the generous yet poorly designed backyard. The clients also expressed a desire to include a master suite and a study nook to align with their lifestyle. During the architectural design phase, however, the brief evolved significantly, culminating in a more ambitious vision that reimagined the home as a versatile and inviting space for daily life, entertaining, and relaxation.

Today, Cary House retains its historical charm while boasting a modernized layout and a host of new features. The original cottage now accommodates a guest bedroom, a cozy library, and an additional bathroom, preserving the home’s historical essence while enhancing its utility. The existing hallway seamlessly transitions into the new open-plan section, which encompasses a spacious kitchen, dining, and living area. Thoughtfully designed joinery in the kitchen conceals a surprisingly large laundry and butler’s pantry, maintaining the sleek aesthetic of the space. Nestled beneath the striking black staircase, a wine store adds an elegant and practical touch.

The upper level introduces a retreat-like atmosphere, featuring a master suite with bespoke joinery, a luxurious double-shower bathroom, and a large study designed to cater to the clients’ work-from-home needs. A discreet attic room provides additional storage or functionality as needed. The master bedroom and study are equipped with architectural timber shutters that can be opened or closed remotely, offering the perfect balance of privacy, light control, and a connection to the outdoors.

A defining feature of the home is its emphasis on integrating interior and exterior spaces. Timber sliding doors in the living and dining areas open onto a meticulously landscaped backyard, transforming the outdoor space into an extension of the home’s living quarters. This harmonious flow between inside and out creates an urban oasis that serves as a sanctuary for the homeowners, their guests, and, of course, Maxie. The design ensures that every element of the property feels cohesive and intentional, blurring the boundaries between architecture and landscape.

Cary House now stands as a testament to the seamless blend of old and new, tradition and innovation. By preserving the cottage’s historical charm while incorporating contemporary design elements, the project achieves a balance that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Whether hosting friends and family or enjoying quiet moments at home, the clients and Maxie can delight in a space that reflects their personality, meets their practical needs, and offers a serene retreat from urban life.
