Stanton Williams shortlisted for high-profile Swiss laboratory
5th January 2016 – Stanton Williams is the only UK, and non-Swiss, architecture practice to be shortlisted in an international design competition to create a new physics building for ETH Zurich, one of the leading European universities for technology and the natural sciences.
The competition calls for design proposals for a new 15,000m2 laboratory and research building for the University’s Hönggerberg campus located just outside Zurich, Switzerland. The campus is being developed as a masterplan, and the new building will be located on the north west of the site. Providing specialist facilities for work at the forefront of physics research, the building will include laboratories, teaching spaces and offices.
In addition, the competition requested proposals for a potential second building adjacent to the physics building, which could potentially be part of a phased construction programme.
The winning scheme will be announced in June 2016.
Stanton Williams are working with Swiss architecture practice Stähelin Architekten, and their team includes S+B Baumanagement AG Olten, ZPF Ingenieure AG and Jobst Willers Engineering AG. Among the other shortlisted teams are architecture practices: mlzd Architekten, Harry Gugger Studio Ltd, Boltshauser Architekten AG, EM2N.
ETH Zurich also has an architecture school, which is of worldwide reputation.
Stanton Williams are a multi-award-winning architectural design practice based in London. The practice has developed its portfolio from an initial focus on museums and galleries towards a wide variety of projects, all of which demonstrate its overarching objective of putting the user’s experience of space, light and materials at the forefront of the agenda, as well as creating places that sensitively respond to their cultural, social and physical context.
Current projects include: the Musée d’Art in Nantes, France; university key worker homes and local centre in the Northwest Cambridge Development; a new research centre for Great Ormond Street Hospital in London; a student residential building at King’s Cross and a number of high-end residential projects in Central London.
